Career transitions from the English Premier League
Achieving and then maintaining a career as a professional athlete is hard. Saturated labour markets and the ever-present risk of deselection or injury means that career transitions are an inevitable feature of all athletes' biographies. Like many other professional sports organisations, English Premier League (EPL) clubs have been called upon to provide adequate support to players upon their release from their club. This investigation will examin…
The Presentation of Possible Selves in Everyday Life
In contrast to research, which privileges the notion of an exclusive athletic identity, we argue that the identity management of professional athletes is influenced by the expectations of audiences and the motivational weight of ‘possible selves’ in explaining career transitions from ‘sports work’. Qualitative vignette interviews were conducted with 10 male participants (ages 18–26 years) on three separate occasions (30 interviews). All interview…
A Flock of Swallows
Athleticism in British public schools and grammar schools has been covered extensively, but not exhaustively. Much less attention has been paid to the extent to which it was a feature of elementary school life. Colm Kerrigan believes that it was widespread in elementary schools and he has further asserted that elementary school teachers and head teachers took little or no notice of pronouncements on Athleticism by guests of honour at presentation…
The Evolution of Athleticism in Elite Irish Schools 1878–1914. Beyond the Finn/Cronin Debate
The debate about the development of sport in Ireland is a lively one and is broadening all the time as more and more historians investigate it. This essay examines the criticisms by Cronin on Finn and argues that Cronin has at best an imperfect understanding of Athleticism as an education ideology. It explores the ideology of Athleticism with a focus on two elite Irish schools and points the way for more detailed research approach in understandin…
A Potent and Pervasive Ideology’
This article demonstrates that the ideology of athleticism was an important feature of life in elementary schools throughout the country in the late Victorian and Edwardian era. It argues that the ideology which originated in the Victorian public school spread firstly to ‘Oxbridge’ and then to grammar schools before being adopted increasingly by elementary schools after the Cross Commission of 1888. It offers a detailed consideration of the argum…
Rescued from Obscurity
During the Great War many elementary schoolteachers volunteered. Some were outstanding sportsmen. The search for these ‘insignificant' men has only just begun. Rescued from Obscurity is a tribute to and an as yet far from complete record of these forgotten of the conflict, trained in denominational and non-denominational colleges and inculcated in both with a period belief in the moral qualities allegedly inherent in games playing. Within the col…
For All That Was Good, Noble and True’
I would like pay personal tribute to Professor J.A. Mangan, who was the supervisor of my Ph.D. His constant encouragement and support while I was completing my thesis is gratefully acknowledged. He also showed great generosity to the extent of inviting me to stay at his house on my visits to Strathclyde University. He is a truly wonderful mentor and I am proud to call him a friend
Pathfinding and pathmaking
