Multiple Group Comparisons of the Fixed and Random Effects From the Generalized Linear Mixed Model
In this article, we extend Liao's test for across-group comparisons of the fixed effects from the generalized linear model to the fixed and random effects of the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Using as our basis the Wald statistic, we developed an asymptotic test statistic for across-group comparisons of these effects. The test can be applied when the fixed and random effects are multivariate normally distributed, and it works well for an…
Gender differences in early literacy
Research consistently documents that girls outperform boys in literacy achievement, yet, when considering the starting point—early literacy—we do not have consensus on the origin, meaningful nature, or persistence of such differences. In this two-part study analyzing 5,816 Norwegian students (48.1% girls, average age of 6.1 years), we first considered the presence and meaningful nature of gender differences at school entry. Presence of difference…
Assessing children's reading comprehension on paper and screen
Recent meta-analyses (Delgado et al., 2018; Kong et al., 2018; Clinton, 2019) show that reading comprehension on paper is better than on screen among (young) adults. Children's screen reading comprehension, however, is underexplored. This article presents an experiment measuring the effect of reading medium on younger (10-year old) readers' comprehension, carried out in Norway in 2015. In a within-subjects design, students (n = 1139) took two com…
Modellierung sprachlicher Anforderungen in Testaufgaben verschiedener Unterrichtsfächer
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the relationship between academic language registers and school success in the German-speaking education system. However, we still know very little about the actual effects that academic language has on the academic performance of students, for instance, in how far the extent to which academic language is used in subject tasks actually makes these tasks more difficult. It is therefore highly vital…
The role of academic achievement growth in school track recommendations
Homogenous and high performing classes
Forty-Six Years of IRE
