The Rationalization of Korean Universities
National transparency
Nation-states worldwide are institutionalizing a culture of transparency and accountability. In our analyses of data reported in the United Nations (UN) Statistical Yearbooks since 1970, we identify two main trends: (1) national governments are providing a greater amount of data on a larger set of social, political, and economic domains, and (2) national governments increasingly offer such data in accordance with international standards introduce…
The Interplay between Globalness and Localness
The global and local are not a dichotomous classification and the interplay between them becomes more and more complex. This article seeks to provide an account that makes sense of the simultaneous coexistence of these two seemingly contradictory trends. In this article, we attempt to compile a theoretical combination of `globalness' and `localness' while presenting the case of Korea's globalization. We explore, as an example of the dynamics betw…
Transparent Accounting as a World Societal Rule
A worldwide movement of theorization and professionalization of management has spread a variety of modern organizational systems, including personal training, decision-making, accounting, organizational behavior, and strategy. This movement advocates expanded notions of organizational ‘rationality’, denigrating older forms of organization. In this chapter, I examine and explain this movement, focusing on the area of accounting. The core theme is …

The Expansion of Modern Accounting as a Global and Institutional Practice
A worldwide movement of theorization and professionalization of management has spread a variety of modern organizational systems, including personal training, decision-making, accounting, organizational behavior and strategy. This worldwide development promotes and expands notions of ‘organizational rationality’ while undercutting older communal forms of organizing. In this article I examine and explain this development, focusing on the area of a…
Yes, There Is a (Growing) Transnational Business Community
This research evaluates the empirical evidence of an emerging transnational corporate community over the past 25 years. In a study of the Fortune Global 500 between 1983 and 1998, we find a significant increase in the total number of interlocking directorates and even greater growth in transnational interlocks. This growth is predominantly among firms within the European Community and between firms in Europe and the US. There has also been a dram…
The Global Digital Divide
This article concerns the comparative dimension of the digital divide, the global digital divide, assessing processes of various sorts that shape this differentiating feature and mapping its trends of change. The authors (a) “map” the global digital divide with multiple indicators to find patterns of varying degrees of differentiation between countries worldwide and between blocs of countries and (b) assess the various national characteristics th…
Structural Expansion and the Cost of Global Isomorphism
Central governments have expanded over time across all regions in both ministerial and fiscal scales. However, it has not been shown empirically whether the structural expansion of central government is even a world-wide phenomenon. By studying both ministerial and fiscal expansion of 116 sovereign nation-states from 1950 to 1990, this study empirically demonstrates the global nature of governmental expansion and further examines its implication …
Rights, Culture, and Cosmopolitan Democracy
This essay examines the promise of universal democratization in relation to the threat of cultural homogenization. Does the promotion of human rights represent an unacceptable form of global cultural homogenization? How might it be possible to respect the dignity of individual cultures even while advancing the cause of rights as a matter of right versus wrong? The paper argues the case that these two conflicting impulses can be addressed within a…
Nation-State Participation in Intergovernmental Technology Organizations
The world regime of development in the post-WWII era has given rise to the expansion of intergovernmental technology organizations (IGTO) and membership. Providing standards and regulations and engaging in collective research and development, these organizations play an important role in constructing the political, cultural, and technological landscape in the world. This study reveals that nation-states joined more IGTOs over time, but to varying…
The Worldwide Founding of Ministries of Science and Technology, 1950-1990
This article explores the increasing involvement of the state in science, in particular the establishment of a new cabinet-level ministry for science and technology by 146 countries from 1950 to 1990. As confirmatory analyses to test hypotheses, I employ event history techniques-piecewise exponential models with period-specific effects. The results show that although internal, functional conditions exerted a positive influence on the adoption rat…
