A Concluding Unscientific Postscript on Religious Development
Susan Kwilecki's A Scientific Approach to Religious Development (1988b) was a welcome response to our model of religious development (Kahoe & Meadow, 1981; Meadow & Kahoe, 1984), despite its critical tone. Less gratifying was its total innocence of a threepage letter sent to the author during the article's review process. Kwilecki has said that our critique was reflected in intermediate versions of the paper, but editorial constraints removed tha…

The Development of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Religious Orientations
Previous reviews of the origins and development of Gordon Allport's concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientations (Hunt & King, 1971; Meadow & Kahoe, 1984; Donahue, 1985) tend to be atomistic. By contrast this brief overview focuses on more general issues and suggests some new understandings of the orientations. We first trace Allport's inherent, but usually overlooked, hypotheses about the development of intrinsic and extrinsic reli…
A developmental perspective on religious orientation dimensions
Religious Conservatism in a Quasi-Longitudinal Perspective
College freshmen personality inventories and a mail survey were used to study correlates of current and retrospective (college freshmen) conservatism among 142 former students of a religiously conservative college. A content-free aspect of conservatism, reflected by authoritarian and dogmatic personality traits, was identified, but it had greater salience for racial than for religious or legalistic attitudes. The latter attitudes were inferred to…
Toward a task-centered christianity
Intrinsic Religion and Authoritarianism
Intrinsic religious orientation was related to six factor scales from the California F scale items for denominational college students. The results cross validated a prioritem analysis of the entire F scale. Only two factors (conventionalism and superstition and stereotypy) accounted for the previously-reported relationship between authoritarianism and intrinsic religion, and these factors were independently judged to be highly salient for sincer…
A Search for Mental Health
Reviews several sets of psychological concepts that reflect the general position that mental health and mental illness are separate dimensions—not just the opposite or absence of one another. The impact of these concepts is that mental illness involves a defensive ego orientation, and mental health involves a growth-related task orientation. The position is related to concepts of conventional morality and some explicit teachings of Christ regardi…
The Fear of Death and Religious Attitudes and Behavior
The relationship of fear of death to selected religious attitudes was studied as a preliminary test of hypotheses that fear of death may motivate religious faith and may be allayed by some but not all religious orientations. Subjects were 70 members of 2 Protestant and 1 Catholic congregations in a small mid-South town. Death concern was negatively related to intrinsic religion and self-rated religious concern in the total sample. Patterns among …
The Psychology and Theology of Sexism
Studied the relationships between two dimensions of sexism and ten personality variables among 92 college students, sexes analyzed separately. The psychological data were interpreted and discussed in the context of traditional evangelical theologies of woman. Particular emphasis was given to the fact that basic sexism was associated generally with maladaptive personality variables but for the women was also positively correlated with intrinsic re…
