Perceived Caregiver Discrimination and Neurocognitive Development
Socio‐ecological domains and adolescent mental health
Comprehensive assessment of mental health includes wellbeing and psychopathology. Using the dual-factor model of mental health, this study explored associations between socioecological domains and mental health profiles and subsequent moderations by sex, race and ethnicity, and age. Cross-sectional data were from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort (N = 2826). Adolescents were 11-17 years old (mean age 14.4 ± 2.1),…
Everybody’s Mind is Different. Like, It’s Not Gonna Work the Same”
Youths’ perspectives, unique from adults, are shaped by their developmental experiences. This study contextualizes the meaning of mental health and being mentally healthy from adolescent perspectives. Four focus groups of students in grades 9 to 12 ( N = 27) were recruited from a school in an urban city. Participants were mainly female ( n = 22) and majority students of color (e.g., Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx; n = 21). Researchers in…

A sample of 202 immigrants aged 18−39 were recruited from a Qualtrics panel and completed the online survey. Confirmatory factor analysis and multiple linear regression were conducted. Results confir…
Family, Peer, and Neighborhood Influences on Urban Children’s Subjective Wellbeing
Mediators that matter
Persistent inequities in the educational success of Black adolescents are a critical social justice concern. Though psychological distress has been associated with worse educational outcomes, less is known about the mechanisms that may influence this association. This study used nationally representative cross-sectional data from the National Survey of American Life-Adolescent (NSAL-A; 2001-2004) to explore how developmental assets (i.e., self-es…
Financial Behavioral Health and Investment Risk Willingness
Financial behavioral health (FBH) influences numerous socio-ecological domains, affecting investment risk willingness and consequent wealth levels. The experience of FBH by racial group is unknown, and findings of differences between Black and White investors’ risk willingness are mixed. The study’s aims are to establish an FBH measure and explore its application to risk willingness by racial group. The study used a subset of data from FINRA’s 20…
Religious Socialization and Self-Definition Among Black Undergraduate Women Attending Predominantly White Institutions
To date, few scholars have explored religious and spiritual socialization among emerging adult Black women. In this study, we analyzed semi-structured interview data from 50 Black undergraduate women to explore associations between childhood religious socialization messages and current religious beliefs in emerging adulthood. Consensual qualitative methods revealed two broad domains and six themes. The first domain, “religious alignment,” include…
Ethnic–racial socialization as a moderator of associations between discrimination and psychosocial well-being among African American and Caribbean Black adolescents
Findings indicate that preparation for bias messages differentially influences the effects of discrimination on stress and mastery for AA and CB adolescents. The results highlight the importance of exploring ethnic heterogeneity of ERS. Implications for psychosocial well-being are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Photovoice as a tool for exploring perceptions of marijuana use among Appalachian adolescents
This study explored perceptions of marijuana use and abstinence among urban and rural Appalachian high school students using photovoice, enabling this subset of youth to co-construct their perceptions of marijuana use and abstinence. Twelve adolescents, ages 14-17, participated in the study. Participants identified managing stress and feeling peer pressure as two reasons teens might use marijuana. Participants identified four reasons for adolesce…

Ethnic‐racial Socialization, Perceived Neighborhood Quality, and Psychosocial Adjustment among African American and Caribbean Black Adolescents
Ethnic-racial socialization is employed by ethnic minority parents to support their children's psychosocial adjustment. These socialization messages may be associated differently with psychosocial adjustment for Black youth according to ethnicity and qualities of the neighborhood context. This research examined whether associations between ethnic-racial socialization messages and psychosocial adjustment vary by ethnicity and perceived neighborhoo…
Nonorganizational Religious Involvement and Psychosocial Well-Being Among African American and Caribbean Black Youth
Often cited as a developmental and cultural resource, religion has been widely studied. However, few studies have explored the relationship between nonorganizational religious involvement (NRI) and psychosocial well-being among Black youth or within ethnic groups of Black youth. This study examined this relationship among 1,170 African American and Caribbean Black youth who participated in the National Survey of American Life-Adolescent Supplemen…

Perceptions of Success and Self-Sustainability Among Women Participating in an Entrepreneurial Skills Development and Empowerment Program Through Photovoice
Financial independence has been identified in the literature as a means of promoting women’s self-sufficiency and a key aspect of the concepts of success and self-efficacy. Few studies, however, have examined women’s perspectives of their needs and ability to meet those needs consistently over time. Furthermore, little is known about how women assign meaning to, perceive, and experience success or their ability to sustain their needs and the need…
