  • Employed Mothers' Justifications for Using Child Home Care Allowance in Finland

    Open Access•Johanna Lammi-Taskula, Johanna Hietamäki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2025•References: 10

This paper examines the justifications for using the Child Home Care Allowance given by Finnish mothers with a one-year-old child, and the factors associated with these justifications. The study is based on a survey with parents, focussing on mothers with existing employment contract and spouse ( n = 530). The main justification for home care of a one-year-old child was that the child is too young for out-of-home day care. Experiencing home care …

  • Intragroup contact with other mothers living in the same neighborhood benefits mothers' life satisfaction: The mediating role of group identification and social support

Open Access•Tuija Seppälä, Reetta Riikonen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2023•References: 73

Becoming a mother is often accompanied by a loss of social connections, which can reduce the availability of social support. This can increase maternal stress with negative health outcomes. Therefore, we examined how mothers' social contact with other mothers living in the same neighborhood can form a compensative source of social support and wellbeing. Data was collected from mothers ( N = 443) of a child under school age while visiting the publ…

  • Ordinary’ and ‘diverse’ families. A case study of family discourses by Finnish early childhood education and care administrators

Open Access•Petteri Eerola, Maiju Paananen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Studies•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The increased family diversity is a major global trend. Although family configurations are also diverse in contemporary Finland, it has been argued that Finnish family policies and institutional understanding of family life continues to focus on the heteronormative two-parent family with a native Finnish background. To address this issue, we analysed Finnish family discourses through qualitative interviews with early childhood education and care …

  • Negotiating parenting practices: The arguments and justifications of Finnish couples

    Open Access•Petteri Eerola, Johanna Närvi et al.•ARTICLE•Families Relationships and…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This article explores Finnish different-sex couples’ ( n = 12) negotiations on their parental division of labour. Theoretically, the article is based on the literature on gendered parenting practices and relational negotiations. Our discourse analysis reveals how the couples produced ‘togetherness’ and ‘our family’ by representing their care practices as agreements, irrespective of whether the care was described as equally shared or distinctly ge…

  • Cash-for-Childcare: The Consequences for Caring Mothers

Jorma Sipilä, Katja Repo et al.•BOOK•Cash-for-Childcare•2010

This insightful book examines the meaning of, and impacts on, cash-for-care systems for mothers of small children. The contributors present a comprehensive overview of the major political and economic contradictions, theoretical debates concerning cash-for-care, and explore the possibility of implementing it into the social policy system.

  • Combining Work and Family in Two Welfare State Contexts: A Discourse Analytical Perspective

    Open Access•Katja Repo•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This paper describes and compares the way in which British and Finnish mothers of dual‐career families construct discourses on the work and family interplay. Through this comparison, the paper also considers the presence or visibility of larger welfare state frameworks at the level of the discourse of mothers. The paper argues that, despite the many structural and ideological differences between the British and the Finnish welfare states, mothers…
