Scriptural Exegesis and the Pharisees in Josephus
The Pharisees are described by Josephus as 'accurate exegetes ( εξηγηταί ) of the ancestral laws'. This epithet is also used to describe other legal instructional activity, such as that of the seven wise men in chapter one of the book of Esther. An analysis of this word based on its use in ancient Greek sources shows that it does not imply textual interpretation, but rather the categorical instruction in law, especially unwritten, traditional (sa…
The Loss of Center
The destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. , and the concurrent loss of formal independence, was arguably the single most fundamental event affecting the future of the Jewish people during the subsequent centuries. The immediate reaction to the destruction of the Temple among the populace was one of despair and a feeling of a “loss of center,” as is evidenced in some of the post-destruction literature. This response was tempered and moderate…
Effects of serotonin-mimetic drugs on mouse-killing behavior
Muricidal behavior induced in rats by social isolation or by olfactory bulb ablation was blocked following IP administration of serotonin (5–HT) agonist 8-OH-DPAT and 5-MeODM and by 5-HT uptake inhibitors, fluoxetine and indalpine. Among uptake inhibitors, although fluoxetine has a higher IC50 and a higher Ki, it is apparently more efficient than indalpine. The 5-HT agonist, 8-OH-DPAT, acting at a putative 5-HT1A receptor, appears more efficient …
Effects of ethanol withdrawal on muricidal behavior
When naive rats of our colony were individually housed for 1 month with free access to laboratory chow and water as drinking fluid, 6% exhibited muricidal behavior. When naive rats of the same colony were similarly housed but received ethanol 20% in water as the sole source of drinking fluid (ll.5 g ethanol/kg/day), the percentage of killer rats was the same. However, when the rats were housed in similar conditions and submitted to a 1-day ethano…
