A theory of humor elicitation.
This article presents a general theory of humor elicitation that specifies the conditions in which humor is experienced in both social and nonsocial situations. The theory takes into account the interpretation of a stimulus event that is necessary to elicit humor, the difficulty of identifying the humor-eliciting features of this interpretation, and the cognitive elaboration of implications of the event. The influence of these factors is postulat…
Social cognition as segmentation of the stream of behavior
This study examined the influence of familiarity with peers on social cognition in children. Secondand fourth-grade children were given information about an unfamiliar peer before viewing a videotape of that peer. Children were then instructed to segment the ongoing behavioral stream of the target peer into units by pressing a button. Extrapolating from research on the influence of expert knowledge on cognition, we predicted that children who wer…
Emotion in social reflection and comparison situations: Intuitive, systematic, and exploratory approaches
We asked 26 subjects to recall and describe social situations in which either a close or a distant other performed better or worse than the self at an activity that was either high or low in relevance to the self. Subjects then rated the extent to which they experienced each of 18 different emotions in each situation. They also rated each situation on a series of dimensions that Smith and Ellsworth (1985) found to be consequential for differentia…
Reactions of would-be helpers whose offer of help is spurned
An experiment was conducted to test the proposition that rejection of help by a needy recipient constitutes a negative expectancy violation for the would-be helper. The helper will react to this self-threat by expressing negative affect, unfavorable evaluations of the recipient, low attraction to the recipient, and causal attributions for the rejection that cast the recipient in an unflattering light. To test these hypotheses, college freshmen we…
