  • Jobs, Careers, and Callings: Exploring Work Orientation at Mid-Career

Open Access•Janet Mantler, Bernadette Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Career Development•2022

Mid-career is a time when work orientation (i.e., viewing ones’ work as a job, a career, or a calling) comes into sharper focus. Using Wrzeniewski et al.’s tripartite model, we conducted a discriminant function analysis to determine the combination of variables that best discriminates among people who are aligned with a job, a career, or a calling orientation in a sample of 251 full-time, North American mid-career employees. Compared to those who…

  • How Analogue Research Can Advance Descriptive Evaluation Theory: Understanding (and Improving) Stakeholder Dialogue

    Open Access•Bernadette Campbell, Melvin M Mark•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2014•References: 8

Evaluation theories can be tested in various ways. One approach, the experimental analogue study, is described and illustrated in this article. The approach is presented as a method worthy to use in the pursuit of what Alkin and others have called descriptive evaluation theory. Drawing on analogue studies conducted by the first author, we illustrate the potential benefits and limitations of analogue experiments for studying aspects of evaluation …

  • Developing a Stakeholder-Driven Anticipated Timeline of Impact for Evaluation of Social Programs

Open Access•Sanjeev Sridharan, Bernadette Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The authors present a stakeholder-driven method, the earliest anticipated timeline of impact, which is designed to assess stakeholder expectations for the earliest time frame in which social programs are likely to affect outcomes. The utility of the anticipated timeline of impact is illustrated using an example from an evaluation of a comprehensive community initiative in which such a timeline was developed using the concept-mapping methodology. …

  • Welfare Reform and Addiction: A Priori Hypotheses, Post Hoc Explorations, and Assisted Sensemaking in Evaluating the Effects of Terminating Benefits for Chronic Substance Abusers

    Open Access•Robert G Orwin, Bernadette Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The passage of the Contract with America Advancement Act terminated the Social Security Administration’s Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income benefits for persons diagnosed with drug or alcohol addiction (also known as DA&A recipients), effective January 1, 1997. From an evaluation standpoint, the law created the opportunity for a “natural” experiment, specifically, an interrupted time series quasi-experiment. Through the availab…

  • Social Class and Adolescents' Beliefs about Justice in Different Social Orders

    Open Access•Constance Flanagan, Constance A Flanagan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2003•Cited by: 11•References: 17

We report on the justice beliefs of 4508 adolescents from 4 security societies in transition to market economies (i.e., Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Russia) and from 2 opportunity societies (Australia and the United States). Using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), justice beliefs were examined as a function of type of society, social class, and gender. In the security societies, working‐class teens wanted the state and s…

  • The role of intent and harm in judgments of prejudice and discrimination

    Janet K Swim, 博 米田 et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2003•Cited by: 19•References: 26

Four experiments examined how an actor's intent and the harm experienced by a target influence judgments of prejudice and discrimination. The presence of intent increased the likelihood that participants judged an actor as prejudiced and the actor's behavior as discriminatory. When intent was uncertain, harm influenced judgments of the behavior, which in turn influenced judgments of the actor, and participants were more cautious in their judgment…

  • Boys & girls clubs and school collaborations: A longitudinal study of a multicomponent substance abuse prevention program for high-risk elementary school children

    Open Access•Tena L St Pierre, Melvin M Mark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2001•References: 26

This study tested the effectiveness of a multicomponent after-school substance abuse prevention program for high-risk second- and third-grade children implemented collaboratively by Boys & Girls Clubs and their local schools. The 2-year program was designed to reduce risk factors predictive of later substance abuse, and to enhance protective factors shown to buffer risk. Results showed positive effects on program children's personal competency sk…

  • Evaluating Measures of Contemporary Sexism

    Open Access•Bernadette Campbell, E Glenn Schellenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 22•References: 10

Two recently published measures of contemporary sexist attitudes were examined and compared with a sample of 106 Canadian college students. Swim, Aikin, Hall, and Hunter's (1995) Modern Sexism scale was found to be an acceptable measure of sexist attitudes in terms of its internal reliability and its ability to predict other gender-related political attitudes. Although the Modern Sexism scale and the Neosexism scale (Tougas, Brown, Beaton, & Joly…
