Genre-specific Writing Motivation in Late Elementary-age Children
Writing motivation is a multidimensional construct that has been demonstrated to be of great importance in writing performance and growth. Yet, much of the extant research has failed to examine the nuances of the various dimensions of writing motivation—in particular, task competency beliefs—and has neglected to investigate how the various dimensions are related to writing performance across different genres of writing. Our goals in this study we…
Resolving Dimensionality in a Child Assessment Tool
Multidimensionality and hierarchical data structure are common in assessment data. These design features, if not accounted for, can threaten the validity of the results and inferences generated from factor analysis, a method frequently employed to assess test dimensionality. In this article, we describe and demonstrate the application of the multilevel bifactor model to address these features in examining test dimensionality. The tool for this ex…
Sex Differences in Age-Associated Rate of Decline in Grip Strength When Engaging in Vigorous Physical Activity
Handgrip strength (GS) is used as an indicator of overall muscle strength and health outcomes for aging adults. GS has also been evaluated as a potential link with sport performances. We quantified the age-associated decline in grip strength for males and females engaged in weekly vigorous physical activity, differentiated by body mass, and investigated whether there was an acceleration of decline at any age. The Survey of Health, Ageing and Reti…
Direct and Indirect Effects of Literacy Skills and Writing Fluency on Writing Quality Across Three Genres
Data were collected for this study early in the school year to analyze the direct and indirect effects of word-level literacy skills (word recognition, spelling, and written vocabulary use) and handwriting fluency on writing quality across three genres of typewritten papers. We further explored whether typing fluency and text generation fluency mediated the effects. Finally, we examined whether there was any difference in the effects across three…
Understanding Scientists’ Willingness to Engage
A set of parallel surveys of scientists from multiple scientific societies finds that the most consistent predictors of willingness to take part in engagement activities with the public are a belief that she or he will enjoy the experience (attitude), make a difference through engagement (response efficacy), and has the time to engage. Age, sex, scientific field, what a scientist thinks about the public, perceived personal engagement skill (self-…
The Effect of Maternal Language on Bilingual Children's Vocabulary and Emergent Literacy Development During Head Start and Kindergarten
This investigation examined the impact of maternal language and children's gender on bilingual children's vocabulary and emergent literacy development during 2 years in Head Start and kindergarten. Seventy-two mothers and their children who attended English immersion programs participated. Questionnaires administered annually over a 3-year period revealed that mothers increased their usage of English to their children. In addition, more mothers o…
A randomized behavioural trial targeting glycaemic index improves dietary, weight and metabolic outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes
Objective Glycaemic index (GI) reflects the postprandial glucose response of carbohydrate-containing foods. A diet with lower GI may improve glycaemic control in people with diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the change in outcomes following a behavioural intervention which promoted lower-GI foods among adults with diabetes. Design A pre-test–post-test control group design was used with participants randomly assigned to an…
Exposure to English Before and After Entry into Head Start1
This investigation examined the Spanish and English receptive vocabulary and language comprehension abilities of bilingual preschoolers who attended Head Start over a two-year period. It was hypothesised that bilingual children's development would follow linear trajectories and that the development of children who were only exposed to Spanish in the home prior to school entry would differ from children with exposure to Spanish and English from bi…
The development of self-efficacy and outcome expectation measures regarding glycaemic load and the nutritional management of type 2 diabetes
Objective Traditionally, carbohydrate has been the largest contributor to energy intake among people with diabetes, yet different carbohydrate foods produce different glycaemic responses. Glycaemic load represents the total glycaemic effect of the diet and influences glycaemic control. Adequate self-efficacy and outcome expectations are needed to change carbohydrate intake and to evaluate relevant interventions. The purpose of this research was t…
Family dynamics and child outcomes in early intervention
Kindergarten teachers’ views of children’s readiness for school
Conditions Affecting Integrity of a Factor Solution under Varying Degrees of Overextraction
Simulated data were employed to test the integrity of orthogonal factor solutions when varying sample size, factor pattern/structure coefficient magnitude, method of extraction (principal component vs. common factor), number of variables, number of factors, and degree of overextraction. Factor solutions’ integrity was operationalized by comparing sample factor/component patterns to known population factor patterns, from which measures of nonzero …
Assessing Change Over Time Using Latent Growth Modeling
This article provides an introduction to latent growth modeling, a branch of structural equation modeling that facilitates the evaluation of longitudinal change
