Local mortality patterns in Italy at the beginning of the 21st century
We analysed mortality levels and trends at the municipal level in Italy between 2002 and 2018, covering approximately 8000 local administrative units. Detailed mortality data at this level are unavailable, and apparently only crude death rates can be calculated (deaths divided by the average, i.e. mid-year, population). To overcome this limitation, we calculated standardised mortality ratios (SMR), comparing observed deaths to expected deaths der…
Women’s Economic Empowerment in Sub-Saharan Africa
Women’s economic empowerment (WEE) in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries is a topic of great interest, which DHS data nowadays permit to examine. Analyses conducted at country or group level, however, frequently use synthetic indicators that transform complex realities into a single measure (such as a sum or an average), which may oversimplify reality, and hide internal heterogeneity. This limitation may be overcome by the use of the advanced ve…
Disgruntled Italians – social capital and civic culture in Italy
The aim of this study was to analyse the geography of social capital in Italy thirty years after publication of the book Making Democracy Work – Civic Traditions in Modern Italy (Putnam etal. 1993). We used a statistical method (Distance Between Strata [D.B.S.]), which had not previously been applied to the study of social capital, and data from the 2019 I.S.T.A.T. Multiscope Household Surveys ‘Aspects of daily life’. We analysed the distribution…
Civicness, social relations and environmental behaviour
Despite a longstanding debate, research on social capital in Italy is waning. This article renews this topic by offering novel methodological and theoretical advancements. We shed new light on the phenomenon by integrating classical social capital dimensions (civicness, social relations) with environmental attitudes. Our analysis, utilizing an original clustering technique on individual-level data, reveals the departure of certain regions of the …
So Close, So Far. The Cultural Distance of Foreigners in Italy
The presence of foreigners in a host country is a contentious issue: opponents claim, among other things, that the cultural distance between them and natives is too large to permit integration. However, it is impossible to ascertain whether this is true in the absence of a clear, standardised system for measuring cultural distance (whether it be by nationality, length of stay, educational level, etc.). In this paper, we argue that a recently prop…
