  • An explainable machine learning approach to predict prolonged grief severity using the MARBLES archive

    Open Access•Chusi Xie, Muriel A Hagenaars et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2026

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD), characterised by persistent and disabling grief, is officially recognised as a mental disorder. Accurate prediction of prolonged grief (PG) symptomatology is vital to intervention efforts. We trained machine learning models to predict PG severity using cross-sectional data from the MARBLES archive ( N = 5570). With explainable AI (XAI), we examined linear and nonlinear relationships, individual differences, and int…

  • The Dance of the Mechanisms: How Observed Information Influences the Validity of Missingness Assumptions

    Open Access•Rianne M Schouten, Gerko Vink•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2021•References: 11

Missing data in scientific research go hand in hand with assumptions about the nature of the missingness. When dealing with missing values, a set of beliefs has to be formulated about the extent to which the observed data may also hold for the missing parts of the data. It is vital that the validity of these missingness assumptions is verified, tested, and that assumptions are adjusted when necessary. In this article, we demonstrate how observed …

  • Differences between resource control types revisited: A short term longitudinal study

    Open Access•Albert Reijntjes, Marjolijn Vermande et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 5

Hawley's influential resource control theory (RCT) posits that both coercive and prosocial strategies may yield social dominance, as indexed by resource control. Based on differences in youths’ relative use of these strategies, RCT a priori defines five distinct subtypes. Several studies by Hawley and colleagues have revealed substantial differences between subtypes in terms of obtained resource control and various social characteristics (e.g., a…

  • The Effectiveness of Parent Management Training—Oregon Model in Clinically Referred Children with Externalizing Behavior Problems in The Netherlands

Open Access•Jill Thijssen, Gerko Vink et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2016

The present study examined the effectiveness of parent management training-Oregon model (PMTO) as a treatment for children with externalizing behavior problems in The Netherlands. Clinically referred children (N = 146) aged 4-11 years and their parents were partly randomized to either PMTO (n = 91) or Care As Usual (CAU; n = 55). Families were assessed at four time points: at pretreatment, and after 6, 12, and 18 months. Results showed that both …

  • Multiple Imputation of Squared Terms

    Open Access•Gerko Vink, Stef Van Buuren•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We propose a new multiple imputation technique for imputing squares. Current methods yield either unbiased regression estimates or preserve data relations. No method, however, seems to deliver both, which limits researchers in the implementation of regression analysis in the presence of missing data. Besides, current methods only work under a missing completely at random (MCAR) mechanism. Our method for imputing squares uses a polynomial combinat…
