Social Correlates of Confucian Ethics in Taiwan
Using data from a recent nationwide social survey in Taiwan, this study investigated the extent of support for Confucian ethical beliefs across socio-demographic groups in the Taiwanese population. Although the extent of such support varied across occupation, residence, and place of origin, it did not significantly vary across most socioeconomic groups. The convergence of Confucianism was suggested and explained in terms of the recent economic de…
Social class, parental values, and child-rearing practices in Taiwan
This research examines the relationships among social class, parental values, and child‐rearing practices using data from a recent national survey in Taiwan. Kohn's “self‐direction versus external conformity” hypothesis was not supported, nor was his “intent versus consequence” hypothesis. Data, however, showed some evidence in support of Bronfenbrenner's “physical versus psychological” hypothesis. Attempts were made to explain the results in ter…
Premarital sexual permissiveness of American and Chinese college students
Employing the Reiss scale of premarital permissiveness, the author compared attitudes toward kissing, petting and coitus among American and Chinese college students. The data were composed of self‐administered questionnaires completed in class by 227 students in a state university in Texas, and by 708 students in a national university in Taiwan. As expected, Chinese students were far less permissive than American students. The pattern of less per…
The protestant ethic among college students in two Chinese societies
The Mirels‐Garrett Protestant Ethic scale along with several sociodemographic and attitudinal measures was administered to a sample of Taiwanese college students and a sample of Hong Kong college students in an attempt to empirically investigate the Protestant Ethic in the Chinese culture. Analyses indicated that both samples of Chinese students exhibited lower scores on the scale than American students. The data suggests that compared to Taiwane…
Social Correlates of Alienation among Chinese College Students in Hong Kong
This paper examined the major social correlates of alienation found earlier in the empirical studies obtained with US and Eastern samples to see if they held among college students in Hong Kong. 154 students enrolled in a public-supported college in Hong Kong were administered a revised form of the alienation scale developed by Zeller, Neal, and Groat. Analyses indicated that similar to most findings obtained from Taiwanese, only school class sta…
Individual and Social Correlates of the Just World Belief
This paper reports the results of a study to identify empirically the nature and correlates of the Just World Belief among Taiwanese college students. Data were collected from over 1,000 students enrolled in two major Taiwanese universities. Similar to Western findings, the average Just World Scale score fell almost exactly at the midpoint of the acceptance-rejection attitudinal continuum. Also similar to Western findings were strong correlations…
Employment Characteristics, Course Satisfaction and Academic Performance of College Students
This study examined the role of course satisfaction in correlations between academic performance and three characteristics of employment: employment status, kind of employment, and job's relevance to major. Data were obtained from 320 students by questionnaires. A stratified (by sex, major and class standing), random-sampling technique was used to obtain data from junior and senior full-time students at a state university. Academic performance wa…
