Shaping a career in management
The study focuses on students in professional bachelor programs, how men and women navigate career opportunities after graduation. The research is based on longitudinal data from 969 Norwegian students. A crucial finding is that when men and women have equal expectations of entering a management position, they also attain such positions equally often. The results also reveal that women have equally high ambitions as men, but lower expectations of…

Work–Family Interference
The aim of the study is to investigate the level of work–family inter-ference (WFI) for part-time nurses in Norway and Finland. Part-time work is usually cited as a desirable way in which to facilitate work and family harmony. However, the opportunity to work part-time in professions may be associated with greater difficulties and challenges than commonly presumed. Part-time professionals are often stigmatized as being less committed to work and …
Differences in Women s Working Hours – a Question of Preferences? The article is a contribution to the ongoing debate concerning the impact of preferences for work and family on the employment pattern of women. Based on longitudinal data on female nurses and female physicians, women s attitudes to part-time work during training and in the first years as professionals are examined. Despite very different patterns of part-time work in the two occup…
Career development and masculinities among male nurses
In this article, career development and construction of masculinities among male nurses are examined. Three aspects of masculinity processes are discussed: "escaping from the bodies", leadership and the breadwinner role. Questions about the process "escaping from the body" as a masculinity process are raised, which apply almost equally to men and women. Perhaps this process should be considered as more gender‐independent than stated in previous r…
