Crack-cocaine use practices, harms and respiratory problems
The use of stimulants, such as crack-cocaine, is a global public health concern. Crack-cocaine use is increasing in the UK, but available data is focused on those who inject or also use opioids. To address this gap, characteristics of people using crack-cocaine in England, including respiratory problems among those who smoke, and variation in these by gender are described. Adults self-reporting crack-cocaine use in the past 28 days, recruited by …
Understandings of Culture
This exploratory study renders it an open empirical question how ordinary people understand the meaning of culture and what are its sociopolitical implications. Using original survey data from over 11,000 respondents across nine European countries, the study focuses on an open-ended question where the respondents defined the meaning of “culture” in their own words. The open-ended answers are scrutinized by structural topic modeling, which allows …
Profiles of Pornography Use Based on Addictive Mechanisms and Psychopathological Features
Typology of substance use in a nationally representative sample of French adolescents
Background While typologies of substance use disorder are very informative, they are still scarcer. The aim of this study was to consider a classification system of substance use among adolescents based on types of substance used and levels of use, and to compare identified groups on sociodemographic characteristics, mental and physical health factors, and other psychological indices. Methods A total of 23,294 17-year-old French adolescents were a…
Caused motion across child languages
Previous research on motion expression indicates that typological properties influence how speakers select and express information in discourse (Slobin, 2004; Talmy, 2000). The present study further addresses this question by examining the expression of caused motion by adults and children (three to ten years) in French ( Verb-framed ) vs. English and German ( Satellite-framed ). Participants narrated short animated cartoons showing an agent disp…
On-line sentence processing in Swedish
This study examined on-line processing of Swedish sentences in a grammaticality-judgement experiment within the framework of the Competition Model. Three age groups from 6 to 11 and an adult group were asked to detect grammatical violations as quickly as possible. Three factors concerning cue cost were studied: violation position (early vs. late), violation span (intraphrasal vs. interphrasal) and violation type (agreement vs. word order). Develo…
Phenomenology, psychopathology, and short‐term therapeutic outcome of 102 infants aged 0 to 12 months consecutively referred to a community‐based 0 to 3 mental health clinic
Infants ages 0 to 1 year consecutively referred for psychiatric treatment during the year 2005 were followed, and variables associated with diagnosis and short‐term outcome were assessed. Infants were evaluated using the Psychiatric Infant Navigator Chart and Evaluation that includes nosological diagnoses [ Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, (DC 0–3), Zero to Three, 1994] as well…
Motion in first language acquisition
Two experiments compared how French vs. English adults and children (three to seven years) described motion events. Given typological properties (Talmy, 2000) and previous results (Choi & Bowerman, 1991; Hickmann, 2003; Slobin, 2003), the main prediction was that Manner should be more salient and therefore more frequently combined with Path (MP) in English than in French, particularly with four types of ‘target’ events, as compared to manner-orie…
Human Motor Responses to Simultaneous Aversive Stimulation and Failure on a Valued Task
The effects of presentation of an aversive stimulus and simultaneous failure on a bogus intelligence test upon a subject's aggressive reactions were studied. The subject's fist clenching was used as an indicator of aggression. Four conditions, generated by the combinations of two kinds of stimulus delivered to the subjects (aversive or nonaversive) and two outcomes of the task (failure or success), were investigated. 20 female and 20 male student…
Analyse géométrique des données
In this paper, we present the data analysis processing of a survey about racism. The methodology is that of the analysis of structured data, inspired by specific comparisons in ANOVA, and applied to geometric data (Euclidean clouds). Its realization is done by means of the Language for Interrogating Data (LID) implemented in the EyeLID software
Evidence for a motor mechanism of pain-induced aggression instigation in humans
The automatic skeletal motor responses of 20 male and 20 female student subjects (aged 20–36) receiving a painful stimulation (electric shock) were studied by examining voluntary concomitant extensions and flexions of the arm. These movements were either of long duration, allowing for an on-line control of their execution or, of short duration, requiring extensive pre-programming. Subjects were instructed either to push or to pull a lever upon re…
Weapons effect” revisited
The effect of presenting images of firearms on the speed of clenching of the fist of human subjects simultaneously receiving an aversive stimulation was studied. It was thought that, whereas the classic interpersonal experimental situation confounds the effects of the stimulus presented and several interpersonal processes, speed of fist clenching in a noninterpersonal setting could constitute a valid measure of the subject's readiness to fight. T…
