  • Classical Frequentist Statistics

    Ernest B Hook•ARTICLE•Academic Questions•2025

The Spring 2025 issue of Academic Questions contained a review by William M. Briggs suggesting that social scientists discard “frequentist” statistics, which in his view has badly degraded the credibility of scientific research. Here, physician and medical researcher Dr. Ernest B. Hook writes to defend frequentist or “classical” statistics, and Mr. Briggs provides a response

To determine the effects of changes in maternal cigarette use during pregnancy on birthweight, a sample of Caucasian births free of major malformations (n = 9,943) was examined. Births were stratified by level of maternal smoking in the first trimester and subdivided according to whether the mother continued at the same level, reduced, or quit by the second trimester. Birthweights were adjusted statistically for extraneous variables. As expected,…

Seventy‐six percent of the women reported craving at least one item, while 85% reported at least one aversion. The greatest changes…

  • Human germinal mutations

    Ernest B Hook•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1979•Cited by: 2

A main purpose of monitoring human germinal mutations is to detect environmental predisposing factors of public health concern. At least in principle, three general types may be investigated: specific locus mutations, structural chromosome rearrangements, and numerical chromosome abnormalities. Two different methodological approaches may be distinguished: (1) systematic and ad hoc studies of reproductive outcomes in a defined population of women;…
