The do-it-yourself (DIY) touring circuit changed dramatically in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s when more punk bands that had local reputations began to tour beyond their regional bases. Critics have tended to treat the class remake of urban neighborhoods as a geographical and sociological phenomenon. This article critically examines gentrification as symbolic action. Focusing on press coverage of artist-led gentrification, I argue that reporters present a diffusion narrative that casts artists as both urban pioneers and victims of gentrificat…

I argue that participants in loud car stereo culture share an aesthetic agency, using sound and mobility to construct environments (discussed in this article as mobile heterotopias) that challenge the spatial and temporal constraints of daily life. Their actions and stories speak to, and exist within, broader contemporary debates in the United States abo…
Introduction
‘‘Every sin is the result of a collaboration,’’ claimed Seneca, observing that sin is both a cultural and an intersubjective process. Seneca’s pointed formula implies both cultural performances that maintain normative order and a collusive, furtive will to resist that order. Sin is, to be sure, a rhetorical construct*/but it is also a resource. It is simultaneously social and surreptitious. Above all others, the seven deadly sins have become embl…

Accidents Should Happen
In this article, I chart the continual reemergence of social disruption and cultural critique in the twentieth century, critically examining how this history provides insight into Jenny Holzer's and Krzysztof Wodiczko's use of alternative media in their critical public art. This analysis points to the historical reemergence of a desire to comment on urban life vis-à-vis media practices in a way that allows us to reimagine alternative uses of medi…
