Nation and Classical Music
A new book devoted to the serious study of national music might seem to be a late entry in a crowded field. Music critics and scholars have been writing about national music and nationalism in music for over a century and the literature in English has even accelerated in the past thirty years. The topic has been central to the work of Philip Bohlman, Jim Samson, Richard Taruskin, and a good many other prominent musicologists. Admittedly, much of …
The Ombudsman Enterprise and Administrative Justice
The statutory duty of public service ombudsmen (PSO) is to investigate claims of injustice caused by maladministration in the provision of public services. This book examines the modern role of the ombudsman within the overall emerging system of administrative justice and makes recommendations as to how PSO should optimize their potential within the wider administrative justice context. Recent developments are discussed and long standing question…
The courts' relationship to ombudsmen – supervisor and partner
The nature of the relationship between the courts and ombudsmen is explored through the prism of an analysis of the determination in the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal that the Commissioner for Complaints had no power to make recommendations for financial redress nor to issue a special report to the Northern Ireland Assembly where an injustice had not been or would not be remedied. It is suggested that courts and ombudsmen share roles in holdin…

Using the published operas as well as reviews from period newspapers, the author retraces the events of the Philadelphia-born Drayton's professional life. Concentrating on the creative works, the author shows how Drayton went from playing stock roles at London's Drury Lane Theatre to collaborating…

Putting the Ombudsman into Constitutional Context
This article argues that in debates on constitutional reform more attention should be paid to the potential contained in the office of the ombudsman. It highlights four key areas of the constitutional activity in which the ombudsman is well designed to make a significant contribution. The argument is also made that both within and outside the UK there have been a number of developments in ombudsman practice in recent years that suggest that more …
