  • An Evolutionary Perspective on the Implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Open Access•Matthieu Pitteloud, Lafi Aldakak et al.•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2025

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were formulated in 2015 by the United Nations to improve human health and achieve sustainable existence at a global level. Failure to reach the SDGs will cause not only increased morbidity and mortality worldwide but also a depletion of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, and irreversible climate warming. Apart from structural and financial barriers, human behavioral reluctance to implement the SDGs i…

  • Selling, buying and eating – a synthesis study on dietary patterns across language regions in Switzerland

    Open Access•Katarina L Matthes, Christine A Zuberbuehler et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2022

Purpose Cross-cultural studies on differences in eating and consumer behavior have several limitations due to differences between countries, for example, in national health policies. Switzerland combines cultural diversity between the language regions, but with a common national health policy. Therefore, Switzerland provides an ideal framework to investigate cross-cultural eating and consumer behavior. The aim of this study was to combine food co…

  • The role of body height as a co‐factor of excess weight in Switzerland

Open Access•Marc Rickenbacher, Nejla Gültekin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2022

OBJECT: ) is a major health issue worldwide, including in Switzerland. For high-income countries, little attention has been paid to body height in context of excess weight. The aim of this study is to assess the importance of body height as a co-factor for excess weight in multiple large nationwide data sets. DATA AND METHODS: In this comparative study, we included the largest nationwide and population-based studies in the fields of public health…

  • Associations between hydration status, body composition, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors in the general population

Open Access•Turgut Ekingen, Cynthia Sob et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Sex, age, body composition, and physical activity influence body hydration. There seem to be differences in body water regulation between the sexes. Especially interesting are factors susceptible to preventive measures such as physical activity

  • Life-history tradeoffs in a historical population (1896–1939) undergoing rapid fertility decline

    Open Access•A V Jaeggi, Jordan S Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 52

Evolutionary demographers often invoke tradeoffs between reproduction and survival to explain reductions in fertility during demographic transitions. The evidence for such tradeoffs in humans has been mixed, partly because tradeoffs may be masked by individual differences in quality or access to resources. Unmasking tradeoffs despite such phenotypic correlations requires sophisticated statistical analyses that account for endogeneity among variab…

  • Have Swiss adult males and females stopped growing taller? Evidence from the population-based nutrition survey menuCH, 2014/2015

Open Access•Linda Vinci, Joël Floris et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2019

Data from the National Nutrition Survey for adults (menuCH) allow for the assessment of recent trends in measured height by year of birth for adult men and women from a population-based sample. The aim of the present study was to test if - similarly to conscripts and schoolchildren - the Swiss adult population stopped growing taller in recent birth cohorts, and if so, when the change occurred. We found that - when self-reported - height was overe…

    Open Access•Renato Bender, Nicole Bender•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 16

Extant hominoids, including humans, are well known for their inability to swim instinctively. We report swimming and diving in two captive apes using visual observation and video recording. One common chimpanzee and one orangutan swam repeatedly at the water surface over a distance of 2–6 m; both individuals submerged repeatedly. We show that apes are able to overcome their negative buoyancy by deliberate swimming, using movements which deviate f…
