Serum homocysteine and folate concentrations among a US cohort of adolescents before and after folic acid fortification
Objective We assessed serum homocysteine (tHcy) and folate concentrations among US adolescents before and after fortification of cereal-grain products with folic acid, and associations with demographic, behavioural and physiological factors. Design Observational study conducted among participants of a randomized trial. Setting The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) study. Subjects Adolescents ( n 2445) in grades 8 (pre-f…
A School-Based Environmental Intervention to Reduce Smoking among High School Students
A school-based environmental program to reduce adolescent smoking was conducted in 20 schools (10 intervention; 10 control) in south central Louisiana. The 9th grade cohort (n = 4,763; mean age = 15.4 yrs; 51% female; 61% Caucasian; 30-day smoking prevalence at baseline = 25%) was followed over four years for 30-day smoking prevalence with the school as the unit of analysis. Although prevalence decreased in intervention schools and increased in c…
Safe Play Spaces To Promote Physical Activity in Inner-City Children
Objectives. We evaluated the effect of providing a safe play space on the physical activity level of inner-city schoolchildren. Methods. In 1 of 2 matched neighborhoods, we opened a schoolyard and provided attendants to ensure children’s safety. Over the next 2 years we directly observed the number of children and their physical activity levels in the school-yard, as well as in the surrounding intervention and comparison neighborhoods. We also su…
Use of the SF-8 to assess health-related quality of life for a chronically ill, low-income population participating in the Central Louisiana Medication Access Program (CMAP)
Nutrient intake over time in a multi-ethnic sample of youth
Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to present longitudinal data on nutrient intakes of youth with emphases on differences by sex and race/ethnicity. Nutrients selected for examination are those implicated in chronic disease. Design: 24-hour dietary recalls were collected from a cohort of third, fifth and eighth graders ( n =1874). Setting and subjects: The sample is drawn from the Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health and inc…
Social support and self‐efficacy for the consumption of fruit and vegetables by adolescents
Two psychosocial variables associated with initiation and maintenance of healthy diets are social support and self‐efficacy. Questionnaires for assessing social support and self‐efficacy for fruit/vegetable consumption were designed for Gimme 5, a controlled 5‐A‐Day study with a high school cohort. Both questionnaires had good internal consistency and factor solutions consistent with theoretical intent. Females had significantly higher family sup…
Cigarette smoking attitudes and first use among third- through sixth-grade students
OBJECTIVES: This study examined cigarette smoking attitudes, peer and parental influence, and first use among children in southeastern Louisiana. METHODS: Data from 933 children in grades 3 through 6 in the Bogalusa Heart Study (1993 through 1994) were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifteen percent of the children had tried smoking. Of these, 40% first smoked with a family member, and 46% obtained their first cigarette from a family member or from home. Corr…
Alcohol consumption among adolescents and young adults
This report describes the alcohol consumption of adolescents and young adults who participated in the Bogalusa Heart Study, 1981 to 1991. Data were collected in three cross-sectional surveys of school-age children (11 to 19 years) and three surveys of young adults (18 to 32 years). White males had the highest proportion of drinkers and Black females had the lowest. By the end of the decade, adult White and Black male drinkers were about equal. Mo…
Epidemiology of early cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular risk factors associated with underlying coronary artery and hypertensive disease develop during childhood. Race‐ and sex‐specific observations from childhood to young adulthood provide clues to the clinical presentation of cardiovascular disease risk later in life. Of particular interest are observations on distributions of levels, tracking, and determinants of lipoproteins and blood pressure, and the impact of obesity on cardiovas…
Body fatness and risk for elevated blood pressure, total cholesterol, and serum lipoprotein ratios in children and adolescents
BACKGROUND. Recent studies have shown considerable variation in body fatness among children and adolescents defined as obese by a percentile rank for skinfold thickness. METHODS. We examined the relationship between percent body fat and risk for elevated blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, and serum lipoprotein ratios in a biracial sample of 3320 children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years. Equations developed specifically for children using…
Secular trends of obesity in early life
Secular changes in height and weight measurements were examined in five- to 14-year-olds from 1973 to 1984. The age-sex specific 85th percentile was used to classify persons as overweight (based on ponderal index; kg/m3). Secular increases in weight (2.5 kg), and ponderosity (0.5-0.7 kg/m3) were found. Gains in ponderosity over the 11-year period were greater at the 75th percentile than at the 25th percentile, and the prevalence of overweight inc…
Factor Structure of a Children's Health Locus of Control Measure
The present study evaluated the validity of a revised version of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scales when the measure is employed with older elementary school children. Confirmatory maximum-likelihood factor analysis employed data from 876 students. The factor structure of the measure matched expected structure fairly closely, although a few deviations from expectation were noted. Thus, the results supported the validity of…
Racial contrasts in hemoglobin levels and dietary patterns related to hematopoiesis in children
Racial differences in hemoglobin (Hgb) levels were explored in two groups of children at different maturational stages, the pre-adolescent (10-year-olds: Whites n = 160, Blacks n = 56,) and the adolescent (15-year-olds; Whites n = 60, Blacks n = 44). Mean Hgb levels were higher for Whites than Blacks in both age groups. When all the dietary components (i.e., iron, zinc, copper, folacin, ascorbic acid and vitamins B12, E and B6) were considered as…
Persistence of juvenile-onset obesity over eight years
The persistence of obesity and overweight over eight years was assessed in a biracial (Black-White) cohort of 1,490 two-to 14-year-olds. Initial levels of triceps skinfold thickness (TRSF) and Rohrer index (weight/height3) were moderately predictive of subsequent levels: r = 0.54 and 0.67, respectively. However, TRSF and Rohrer index tended to track most strongly in Black females (r = 0.64 and 0.72) and less well in both White females (r = 0.45 a…
Longitudinal patterns of cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use in youth
Tobacco use was studied during 1977-76 (n = 2880) and 1981-82 (n = 2158) in a total biracial community of children, aged 8-17 years, in Bogalusa, Louisiana. White males were the early adopters of tobacco products in both surveys. Cigarette smoking decreased in all race and gender groups while smokeless tobacco use increased in White males. Studies which find a decline in male adolescent smoking should investigate a possible concurrent increase in…
The interaction of cigarette smoking, oral contraceptive use, and cardiovascular risk factor variables in children
Two separate surveys were conducted in a total biracial population of children ages 8-17 years to determine the effects of cigarette smoking and oral contraceptive use on blood pressure and serum lipids and lipoproteins. Information regarding smoking habits and oral contraceptive use was obtained from detailed questionnaires. For White boys and White and Black girls, a small but statistically significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure level…
Development trends of first cigarette smoking experience of children
During one school year a health habits survey investigated cigarette smoking behavior in a total biracial population of children, ages 8 to 17 years old. Information was collected concerning each child's first smoking experience. Over 60 per cent of the children reported they were given their first cigarettes. Half of those starting before age 12 smoked their first cigarettes with a family member or an older fried. The smoking habit appears to ha…
Self-Concept, Locus of Control, Goal Blockage, and Coronary-Prone Behavior Pattern in Children and Adolescents
Four measures that are hypothesized to be correlates of cardiovascular risk factor variables were tested in children and adolescents. A psychosocial questionnaire, including Type A coronary-prone behavior pattern and three additional measures (self-concept, locus of control, and goal blockage), was administered to 384 ten- to 17-year-old students in a biracial public school. White scored higher than did blacks on Type A behavior, and Type A behav…
Hemoglobin levels in children from a biracial southern community
Hemoglobin levels were determined for 4,081 children, ages 2 1/2-14 years, from a biracial southern community. Back children had lower levels of hemoglobin than white children at every age interval with a mean difference of 0.64 gm/dl. This diffence persisted even when comparing children from similar socioeconomic level households. If black children maintain lower hemoglobin levels consistent with optimum health than do white children, then diffe…
