  • Identity Formation, Youth, and Development

Kyle Eichas, James E Côté et al.•BOOK•Identity Formation, Youth, and…•2025

A landmark volume in the scientific study of identity formation and youth development, this fully revised second edition synthesizes sociological and psychological approaches to the study of identity. It illuminates the challenges and opportunities that contemporary young people face as they attempt to form identities in societies undergoing transition. The book introduces simplified identity formation theory, which helps newcomers connect the do…

  • Linking Ego and Moral Development

    Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2010

This article addresses the relationship between ego and moral development, as represented by the theories of Erikson and Kohlberg. Based on a constructive critique of the structural perspective of Snarey et al. [1983], an alternative way of conceptualizing the relationship between Erikson’s conception of identity formation and Kohlberg’s conception of moral reasoning is presented. In contrast to a purely structural perspective, this alternative v…

  • Stage Acquisition and Stage Use

    Open Access•Charles G Levine•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

This paper evaluates two developmental perspectives on moral reasoning. While their interpretations differ, both perspectives use stage displacement models to depict moral development. These perspectives assume that as ontogenesis proceeds, the role played by earlier acquired moral stages becomes increasingly insignificant in comparison with the role played by more advanced stages. The discussion argues that the use of displacement models inhibit…

  • The Current Formulation of Kohlberg’s Theory and a Response to Critics

    Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

This article is a synopsis of the monograph Moral Stages: A Current Formulation and a Response to Critics. Recent changes in the theory of moral stages are presented, including a broadening of theoretical and research concerns, differentiation of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ stages, clarification of the form-content distinction, revision of A and B substages, clarification of Stages 6 and 7, discussion of moral action, listing of nine metaethical assumption…

  • The Form-Content Distinction in Moral Development Research

    Open Access•Charles G Levine•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

This paper discusses some conceptual and methodological difficulties associated with the use of the form-content distinction in moral development literature. First, the discussion suggests that the use of this distinction should be restricted to the analysis of social environmental influence on moral judgment. An empirical strategy for distinguishing form from content is then provided. It is concluded that any particular variable may exert formal…

  • What Happened to Agency? Some Observations Concerning the Postmodern Perspective on Identity

    Charles Levine, Charles G Levine•ARTICLE•Identity•2005

I argue that Rattansi and Phoenix's (1997) postmodern perspective on identity perspective is insufficient because it (a) fails to differentiate among types of identity and (b) does not include a clearly defined role for the impact of the ego's agentic capabilities on identity formation. I conclude my discussion by offering a revision of their "key features of rethinking" about identity

  • Attitude versus Aptitude

    Open Access•James E Côté, Charles G Levine•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2000•Cited by: 7•References: 4

This longitudinal study explores the relationships among a set of student input and environmental throughput variables in predicting output human capital skills acquisition and academic achievement at a large Canadian university. The framework for exploring these relationships is referred to as the integrated paradigm of student development. To our surprise, it was found that the input intelligence quotient was negatively related to output human …

  • Ego and Moral Development in University Contexts

    Open Access•Charles G Levine, Patricia Pakvis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The Value Consistency Thesis (VCT) proposed and empirically tested by Levine, Jakubowski, and Côté predicts associations between ego and moral functioning by identifying humanistic value orientations common to dimensions of both domains. With hypotheses based on Erikson’s notion of institutionalized moratorium, the present 2-year longitudinal study of 58 undergraduate students investigates the VCT as a function of participation within humanistic …

  • Self and Society

Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1987•Cited by: 6

The relation between individual and collective processes is central to the social sciences, yet difficult to conceptualize because of the necessity of crossing disciplinary boundaries. The result is that researchers in different disciplines construct their own implicit, and often unsatisfactory, models of either individual or collective phenomena, which in turn influence their theoretical and empirical work. In this 1985 book, Drew Westen attempt…

  • Role-taking standpoint and adolescent usage of Kohlberg's conventional stages of moral reasoning

Charles H Levine, Charles Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 4

By taking into account a respondent's role-taking standpoint, this study proposes that moral judgments coded at Kohlberg's conventional stages can be expected to vary depending upon (a) the identity of the protagonist implicated in the moral dilemma and (b) the nature of the issues raised by the moral dilemmas used. Different groups of respondents were asked to answer three versions of Kohlberg's moral judgment questionnaire. One version implicat…
