  • Lifetime Sexual Revictimization in Military Populations

Open Access•Ellis Paulk, Dailier Ayuso et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2025

There are multiple patterns of sexual revictimization specific to individuals who serve in the military, and each pattern may be associated with unique risk factors and outcomes. Our goal was to determine which aspects of those patterns have been studied and what is known. We followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and adhered to Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framew…

  • They Think Transgender is Like Something on the Side

    D R Jimenez, R Beaulaurier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2025•References: 79

Due to multiple minority statuses, transgender women of color are exposed to minority stress through distal (external) stressors from society causing proximal (internal) stress, leading to potentially negative physical and mental health outcomes. Often considered allies to the transgender community, cisgender members of the LGBTQIA+ "community" have historically presented different plights resulting in divergent rights, protections, and societal …

  • Internalizing Pathways to Adolescent Substance Use from Adverse Childhood Experiences

    Open Access•Michelle G Villar, Nicole M Fava et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

The mediating role of anxious, depressive, and somatic symptoms was examined in the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adolescent substance use, with attention to the unique effects of each set of symptoms within the same model. Adolescents (n = 701) were assessed over time (ages 3-17) in a majority male (70.5%) and white (89.9%) sample. Findings indicate that depressive symptoms mediated the association between ACEs and…

  • Sexual health education

    Stephanie L Diez, Nicole M Fava et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2022

With the exponential growth of online information seeking by young people, it is imperative for health and sexual health educators to consider online information a resource young people will pursue. Access to accurate and comprehensive sexual health information is important, yet there is a scarcity of research evaluating the quality of this information. Using youth-direct search terms, this study examined the quality of online information accesse…

  • At risk and in love

    Open Access•Laina Bay-Cheng, Laina Y Bay‐Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2021

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that sexual and romantic relationships play an important role in youth well-being and development. This strengths-based perspective sits in tension with the documented risks that youth with histories of maltreatment face in sexual/romantic relationships. We conducted a U.S.-based mixed-method study to examine the connection between childhood maltreatment and youth relationships. METHOD: = 22.51). Qualitative analy…

  • Trauma-Informed Sex Positive Approaches to Sexual Pleasure

    Nicole M Fava, J Dennis Fortenberry•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2021

This paper develops a trauma-informed sex-positive framework as a public health, clinical, and research approach to sexual experience over the life course. The framework centers trauma-informed sex positivity as the linkage for sexual pleasure (along with sexual wellbeing and sexual health) to the social, cultural, and legal concepts of sexual justice. By providing a conceptual distinction of sexual pleasure from sexual wellbeing and sexual healt…

  • Is there anything else you would like me to know?”

    Open Access•Whitney E Mendel, Michelle Sperlich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 41

Nearly ubiquitous agreement exists regarding the potentially negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on health and well‐being across the lifespan. This has propelled a movement across the nation for consistent screening of ACEs. Despite agreement regarding the consequences of ACEs, little research related specifically to the administration of the ACE questionnaire exists. Using data from a mixed‐methods study of first‐time mothers…

  • Exploring How Trauma Is Addressed in Sexual Education Interventions for Youth

    Open Access•Lisa S Panisch, Monica Faulkner et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2020

Traumatic experiences are common among adolescents and can negatively affect learning and increase the risk of early pregnancy, parenthood, and sexually transmitted infections. Little is known about how current sexual health interventions address trauma. A scoping review was conducted to gain insight into how trauma is addressed in adolescent sexual health interventions. Peer-reviewed studies from the United States published between 2008 and 2018…

  • Sex differences in the development of mild cognitive impairment and probable Alzheimer’s disease as predicted by hippocampal volume or white matter hyperintensities

Shanna L Burke, Tianyan Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2019

This study examined biological sex differences in the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) development as predicted by changes in the hippocampus or white matter hyperintensities. A secondary data analysis of the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set was conducted. We selected samples of participants with normal cognition at baseline who progressed to MCI (n = 483) and those who …

  • Parent-Focused Preventive Interventions for Youth Substance Use and Problem Behaviors

Open Access•Barry A Ladis, Mark J Macgowan et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2019

Research indicates substance use initiation increases the risk of other youth problem behaviors and substance dependence. Preventing these problematic behaviors through parenting has the potential for avoiding deleterious consequences for youth, their families, and the community

  • Effects of Traumatic Incident Reduction on Posttraumatic Symptoms in a Community-Based Agency

Open Access•Teresa Descilo, Nicole M Fava et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2017•References: 1

Objective: This study examined the effectiveness of traumatic incident reduction (TIR) among a sample of adults with trauma histories through a review of client records. TIR is a brief, structured, person-centered, memory-based intervention that helps individuals process traumatic memories, thus eliminating or significantly reducing negative psychological consequences and promoting insight and growth. Method: On average, participants ( N = 247) w…

  • Refining the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale

David A Patterson Silver Wolf, Catherine N Dulmus et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Barriers to adopting evidence-based practices into real-world mental health organizations have received considerable attention and study. One particular attempt is Aarons's Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS), which measures a worker's attitudes toward adopting new treatments, interventions, and practices. This study follows Aarons's work by conducting a confirmatory factor analysis of the EBPAS administered in a large child and family…

  • Trauma-informed sexuality education

    Nicole M Fava, Laina Y Bay-Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2013

Experiences of maltreatment during childhood and the emergence of sexuality during adolescence are both critical developmental issues that intersect in meaningful ways, yet the two are often isolated from each other in practice. Despite the prevalence of childhood maltreatment, sexuality education does not accommodate young people with trauma histories. This results in curricula and content that ignore the particular needs and experiences of a pr…

  • Adolescent Girls' Assessment and Management of Sexual Risks

    Open Access•Laina Y Bay-Cheng, Laina Bay-Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 26

We conducted focus groups with girls ages 14 to 17 ( N = 43) to study how the dominant discourse of sexual risk shapes young women's understanding of the sexual domain and their management of these presumably pervasive threats. Through inductive analysis, we developed a coding scheme focused on three themes: (a) types of sexual risk, (b) factors that moderate sexual risk, and (c) strategies for managing sexual risk. Collectively, participants ide…

  • Young Women's Experiences and Perceptions of Cunnilingus during Adolescence

    Laina Bay-Cheng, Nicole M Fava•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2010•Cited by: 9•References: 9

Recent studies indicate that cunnilingus may be as prevalent as fellatio among American adolescents. Despite this approximate equivalence in rates, there is an imbalance in the amount and type of attention paid to fellatio and cunnilingus. Furthermore, there has been little empirical examination of young women's experiences and perceptions of cunnilingus during adolescence. Two studies in response to this gap in knowledge were conducted. In Study…
