Investigating SNPs Flanking the D1S80 Locus in a Tamil Population from India
D1S80 is a 16-bp variable number of tandem repeats minisatellite. We analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) flanking this locus in a Tamil population. Alleles ranged from 15 through 41 repeats, with alleles 18 and 24 being predominant with frequencies of 31% and 34.5%, respectively, suggesting a bimodal allelic distribution. All the 18-repeat alleles are associated with HinfI(+) and FnuAHI(-) restriction site polymorphisms at the 5' and …
D1S80 Single-Locus Discrimination Among African Populations
The highly polymorphic D1S80 locus has no known genetic function. However, this variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) locus has been highly valuable in forensic identification. In this study we report the allele and genotype frequencies of five African populations (Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, and Rwanda), which can be used as databases to help characterize populations and identify individuals. The allele frequencies were used to infer genet…
A Formal Framework for Mediator Mechanisms and Motivations
A mediator aids disputants in resolving their differences. A theoretical framework for mediator mechanisms extends the subjective expected utility perspective and permits formal examination of mediator attitudes toward the equity and efficiency of agreements. Two forms of impartiality in promoting gains to disputants are examined: active (jointly motivated to help both disputants) and responsive (more motivated to help one disputant at higher pay…
The Risk of Disclosure for Microdata
Statistical agencies that provide microdata for public use strive to keep the risk of disclosure of confidential information negligible. Assessing the magnitude of the risk of disclosure is not easy, however. Whether a data user or intruder attempts to obtain confidential information from a public-use file depends on the perceived costs of identifying a record, the perceived probability of success, and the information expected to be gained. In th…
Flexibility of Alliance Partner Choice in a Multipolar System
International system theorists usually hypothesize great flexibility of alliance partner choice among the major powers in a multipolar system. To test for the existence of such flexibility, three statistically testable hypotheses of alliance partner choice in a multipolar system are derived. Log-linear model procedures are developed for testing hypotheses of dyadic independence and homogeneity in alliance partner choice. A Markov chain model prov…

The Dynamics of Warfare
Stochastic models are constructed to illuminate the dynamic incidence of international warfare during the period from 1816 to 1965. It is argued that the probabilistic structure of this incidence is revealed most clearly through an analysis based on dyads of nations, thereby disassembling multilateral wars such as World War II. The conceptual focus is on a clear delineation of heterogeneity, both over time and over actors, and of contagion, diffe…
