Valuing the economic benefits of species recovery programmes
Accounting for the values placed on nature by the public is key to successful policies in reversing ongoing biodiversity declines. However, biodiversity values are rarely included in policy decisions, resulting in poorer outcomes for people and nature. Our paper addresses an important evidence gap related to the non‐availability of values for appraising large‐scale policies and investment programmes for species recovery and habitat improvement at…

Role Models of Urban Minority Students
Role models identified by 1,300 Afro-American students in Grades 1 through 8 showed athletes, mothers, and musical performers were the top three role models, but there were differences by grade and sex
The Culture- Free Self-Esteem Inventory and the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory
Score of 76 undergraduate women on the Multidimensional Self-esteem Inventory and the Culture-free Self-esteem Inventory were compared to investigate the convergent validity of the Culture-free Self-esteem Inventory. Of the 44 correlations between the two scales 25 were significant
Work Values of Black, Unwed Adolescent Parents
The work values of black unwed adolescent parents were explored using the Values Scale. On 21 scales, the scores of 47 youth (12 to 20 years old) were compared with those of a preliminary normative sample presented in the test manual. Significant differences between the two groups were found on 16 of the 21 scales. The values of these black adolescent parents were less crystallized than were those of the normative group and reflect the concern fo…

Predictors of Academic Self-Concept of Older Adults
This study examined the predictors of the academic self-concept of 130 older adults (50 to 68 yr.). The Levenson Multidimensional Locus of Control Scale, the Gregorc Style Delineator, and the Drummond Academic Self-concept Scale and a demographic data sheet were completed by the adults. In stepwise regression, age and enrollment status plus learning style variables accounted for 11.5% and 4.5% of the variance, and the three locus of control scale…
The Predictive Validity of the Florida College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) for Predicting Grade Point Average with University Seniors and Recent Graduates
This study was concerned with a determination of the predictive validity of the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) for predicting grade point average among university seniors, and recent graduates. The criterion variable was grade point average (GPA); subjects were 732 seniors, and recent graduates enrolled 1984-1987 at a regional university. It was determined that the moderate correlations with GPA, (i.e., math .290, reading .345, writin…
Dimensions of Self-Concept for Children in Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2
This research investigated sex and grade differences in components of self-concept for 461 kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 children with the SCAMIN and IOX Self-appraisal Inventory. Sex and grade differences were found. Correlations between scales and subscales were low; it appears that these instruments measure independent constructs
Stability and Sex Differences on the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory for Students in Grades Two to Twelve
This study reassessed the presence or absence of sex differences and investigated the stability of self-esteem as measured by Coopersmith's Self-esteem Inventory over 6 mo. for Grades 2 to 12. The subjects were 591 students, 296 male and 295 female, enrolled in an urban central Maine school district. No sex differences were found on any of the subscales or total scale score on either the pretest or posttests by grade. Significant correlations, sm…
Nationalism and Ethnic Demands
In an interesting and insightful article published in 1969, James Lightbody has attempted an improvement of the theoretical basis for the study of nationalism among political scientists. He suggests that the historical perspective which has characterized most previous treatments of the subject should be abandoned, and that its replacement should be a model which perceives nationalism as the result of ethnic group demands upon a functioning politi…
The Structure of Self-Concept in Second and Fourth Grade Children
This study examined the factor structure of two self-concept measures commonly used with elementary school age children, the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) and the Self Concept and Motivation Inventory (SCAMIN). Second ( N = 126) and fourth grade ( N=237) samples were examined. Sex differences were found on three SCAMIN scales for fourth grade and on one scale for second grade children. On the CSEI, sex differences were found on one sub…
Note on Test-Retest Reliability of the Self-Concept and Motivation Inventory
Appropriate forms of the Self-concept and Motivation Inventory were administered to 308 girls and 299 boys in Grades 1 to 5 in December and May of a school year. Correlations were quite low suggesting the self-concept is very fluid and/or the inventory is quite unreliable for clinical use
