European Identity Revisited: New Approaches and Recent Empirical Evidence
Are Quantitative Research Methods to Blame for a Growing Irrelevance of Political Science? A Rejoinder to John Trent
‘Is political science out of step with the world?’ This question, raised by John E. Trent in a recent issue, is part of a recurring debate about the development of our discipline. In that article, and in a subsequent book with his colleague Michael Stein, John Trent blames adherents of the ‘scientific method’ for political science’s growing irrelevance. We challenge this claim by arguing that Trent falls back on outdated polarities between ‘objec…

How to Reduce Disorder in European Identity Research
The article aims at opening a debate by offering some ideas about how we can avoid analytical confusion in future inquiry on European collective identity. I discuss two important theoretical deficiencies that impede advancement in the research on this topic. These shortcomings are: (1) the two-level problem in analysing collective identities; and (2) the issue of equating ‘belonging to’ with ‘belonging together’. In doing so, I will also make som…
Why Do We Trust Strangers? Revising the Institutional Approach to Generalised Trust Creation
The institutional approach to generalised trust creation is based on the assumption that only institutions with certain features give people reason to trust strangers. This article offers a revised version of this approach by arguing that there is an indirect rather than a direct link between the properties of institutions and trust among strangers. Referring to a neo-institutional idea of institutions, it is suggested that the potential of insti…

Declining Trust in Elites and Why We Should Worry About It – With Empirical Evidence from Germany
WITHOUT TRUST WE WILL NOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS,’ WARNED Johannes Rau, the former German Federal president in his last ‘Berlin speech’ in May 2004. As one reason for an alarming loss of trust in Germany, creating a serious obstacle to necessary changes, he identified an irresponsible, egoistic and greedy behaviour among parts of German elites. Actually, Johannes Rau did not blame only political elites but also elite members in other sectors such as …
Legitimacy, trust and procedural fairness: Remarks on Marcia Grimes’ study
This article is a reply to Marcia Grimes's 2006 contribution to the European Journal of Political Research entitled ‘Organizing consent: The role of procedural fairness in political trust and compliance’. The remarks focus on two main points. First, the author discusses the conceptual basis of the study, to argue that trust and legitimacy are quite different concepts that should not be used synonymously. In particular, the author challenges the c…
