  • Increasing rainfall due to climate change

    Peter Heyn Nielsen•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2025•References: 26

It has been projected that climate change will eventually lead to increasing rainfall in the winter months in Denmark. This study explores the effect of election day weather on voter turnout in Denmark. A new data set linking weather observations (rainfall, temperature, wind speed) to voter turnout in Danish municipal elections held in mid-November from 1989 to 2021 is the primary object for analysis. Descriptive statistics show that turnout has …

  • Acting on three arenas

Open Access•Peter Heyn Nielsen, Steven David Pickering•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Political Studies•2024•References: 58

Understanding why cabinet ministers are terminated early is still underexplored. Most existing studies focus on performance on one arena. We argue that ministers operate in many different arenas and to fully understand the complex nature of ministerial termination we need to consider ministers' performance in several arenas and their relation to one another. We focus ministers' performance in three arenas; the public/electoral, the parliamentary …

  • Control from the core? The impact of cabinet committees on ministers’ legislative activity

    Open Access•Peter Heyn Nielsen•ARTICLE•European Political Science Review•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 59

Ministers may be powerful policy initiators, but they are not equally powerful. Cabinet control mechanisms have become a crucial part of cabinet governance, which can serve to contain agency loss and consequently constrain ministers in the policymaking process. However, empirical studies have not focused on the impact of such control mechanisms on individual ministers’ political outcomes. I turn attention to certain cabinet committees as intra-ca…

  • Public popularity as a part of the job description? Dismissing unpopular ministers

    Peter Heyn Nielsen•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 30

Are unpopular ministers more likely to be forced out of office than their colleagues in Cabinet? This study examines the relationship between ministers’ unpopularity and their duration in office. By examining opinion polls on the popularity of ministers in Denmark in the period 1978 to 2019, the analysis shows that when Danish Prime Ministers choose to dismiss ministers, they dismiss ministers who are relatively less popular than their colleagues…

  • Popularity as a Measure of Portfolio Salience? The Case of Denmark

    Open Access•Peter Heyn Nielsen•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Political Studies•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 19

This research note examines the connection between portfolio and the individual popularity of ministers as measured in opinion polls. It is an ongoing challenge for political science to derive measures of portfolio salience. In this research note, portfolio popularity is measured in Denmark for the period 1978 to 2019 for 24 different portfolios. Though we know little about it, it is often stated that popularity is important for ministers. If thi…
