Meer dan een politieke vertrouwenspiek
More than a boost in political trust: Dutch public opinion during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dutch public opinion was largely characterized by a more positive outlook on society and politics. We give explanations for this rather positive spirit based on literature on earlier crises and we outline the changes in public opinion between January and April 2020 (using the Citizens' Outlooks …
Convergence or divergence? A multilevel analysis of political values in 18 EU countries 1990–2017
Is er leven na de babyboomers
In this article, we study trends in secularization and spiritualization in the Netherlands in the period 1981-2017. Using data from the European Values Study, we first show that traditional religiosity is on the decline: the level of church membership, church visits, and trust in the church decreased as well as traditional religious beliefs such as belief in a personal god. The cohorts born between 1940 and 1960 (the babyboom generation) triggere…
Convergence on political values? A multi-level analysis of developments in 15 EU countries 2002-2016
Basic core political values differ widely across Europe. From a perspective of European integration a gradual convergence in core political values across European Union countries would be beneficial. Moreover, one would hope that the direction of any possible European value convergence is in accordance with the values stipulated by the European Union. Based on European Social Survey data, developments in public opinion with regard to three person…
Local autonomy, municipal size and local political participation in Europe
Local autonomy in Europe has, on average, increased since 1990 and has decreased (a little) since 2009. The average population size of a European municipality has increased continuously during the last two decades. European countries with larger municipalities do not have more local autonomy. Citizens of large municipalities are less interested in local political matters. Inhabitants of small municipalities tend to be more interested in local pol…
Political participation and municipal population size
Do municipal amalgamations enforce or do they weaken (local) political participation? This is an important question considering a worldwide tendency for municipalities to merge. This question will be answered using a mixed-method approach based on a literature overview (meta-study) in general and additional quantitative (turnout figures, election studies) and qualitative (interviews) data regarding the situation in The Netherlands in particular. …
Indicatoren voor sociale cohesie
Indicators for social cohesion. Japan as a special case and its implications. How to measure social cohesion? There are, in the literature, two main methods for measuring social cohesion: one can measure trust or one can measure civic participation in different kinds of groups. It will be argued that both methods appear to suffer from two biases. First, universal forms of social cohesion are prioritized. Second, in general, perceptions are measur…
Societal pessimism in Japan, the United States, and The Netherlands
This paper starts out with a theoretical argument, based on panel data, that public mood in general and societal pessimism in particular should be measured from an explicitly temporal perspective. Next, based on a survey among more than 200 Japanese students and a wide array of existing (longitudinal) data sources in three different languages and covering several decades it is shown that public mood in three quite different countries – first and …
No Return = No Peace? The Palestinian Refugee Problem and the Two-state Solution in a Regional Context
The Palestinian refugee issue has been a pressing political and humanitarian problem for over sixty years, yet recent frameworks–in particular the two-state paradigm since Oslo–have marginalized the refugees and their claim to a right of return. This article aims to give an overview of the current situation. It argues that the binary logic of the two-state solution has been too narrow to take the refugee problem fully into account, and that the r…
Neighborhood Associations and Social Capital in Japan
Most households in Japan are a member of their neighborhood association (NHA). Japanese NHAs function as basic organizational building blocks that promote a sense of security and familiarity at the local level and facilitate the general organizational efficiency of Japanese society. In this empirically oriented paper, new information is provided with regard to the organizational structure, activities, autonomy, and social meaning of four NHAs in …
