Historically, media have been one of the key networks of power and influence in societies largely as a consequence of their utility in channelling information flows and, in doing so, persuading populations. However, the rapid expansion of social media platforms has revolutionised how such mediated persuasive power is wielded. Many nation states have engaged in sophisticated social media campaigns to influence how others understand economic, socia…
Security psychology
In 1994, the United Nations human security taxonomy signaled a major shift from security as preservation of the nation-state towards a broader and more recent ‘decagonal’ model of human security (entailing everyday needs for personal, health, food, cyber, community, economic, national, environmental, political and, most recently, global security). Building on those foundations, this paper proposes a psychological theory of human security. The lat…
The Internet Research Agency Campaign to Influence the 2016 US Presidential Elections
The centrality of information and communicative processes in persuading society has, historically, made the media one of the key networks of power and influence in society. The rapid expansion of social media platforms has, however, enabled revolutionary changes in how this power is wielded and how persuasion occurs. Using Newztext Plus to find 583 New Zealand – produced news items…
Public inquiries on counterterrorism
In the aftermath of major terrorist attacks, governments create public inquiries to establish the facts of the matter, expose those facts to public scrutiny, find fault, allocate blame, ensure accountability, and restore public confidence. Yet few studies pay close attention to these responses as a practice of remedial intervention into official counterterrorism efforts. Based on our examination of New Zealand’s Royal Commission of Inquiry into t…
Introduction to the Special Section on the Psychology of Security
Concerns regarding human security arguably define the contemporary world. Such concerns relate to the human desire to live with "freedom from want" and "freedom from fear" (United Nations System Task Team, 2012). There are significant challenges for contemporary human security that have emerged with processes of globalization, climate change, migration, population growth, violent extremism, transnational crime, constantly developing technologies,…

The authors investigate the effect of schooling on the aspirations of young people designated as having mild learning difficulties (MLD) or emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) in the first large‐scale study of its kind in England. Data were collected from parents and their 15/16 year‐old children in the final year of their compulsory schooling in schools. The results indicate on average a positive effect of mainstream schooling on the as…
Discourse, pedagogy and the National Curriculum
One of a number of studies of the impact of the National Curriculum on professional and educational practice, the CICADA project, funded by ESRC, focused on pupil‐teacher discourse in primary classrooms, setting it in the wider contexts of (i) a national survey of teachers and (ii) classroom data from before the legislation which heralded the reforms in question. While the survey data confirmed the findings of other studies‐‐namely, a scenario of…
