  • Rising Damp in the Suburbs. Or ‘Whatever Happened to the Villa Tory?’

    Open Access•Lewis Baston•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2019

The suburban areas that were initially stereotyped in the late nineteenth century as ‘Villa Tory’ strongholds and exemplified by Hackney and Islington had, by the 1980s, become ‘bedsitter’ areas dominated by the political left. An examination of the evolution of electoral behaviour in these areas shows that conservatism did indeed dominate the villa suburbs, and that although there were previous intimations of decline, it was not until 1945 that …

  • The Conservative Party and devolved national identities

    Martin Steven, Martin H M Steven et al.•ARTICLE•National Identities•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article focuses on the role of national identity in the behaviour and performance of the Scottish Conservative Party – the main voice of opposition to devolution in the 1990s. In particular, it will address the apparent flat-lining of its popular vote, arguing that this is a direct consequence of the party doggedly adhering to a more traditional form of ‘unionist nationalism’. This can be contrasted with Wales, where the party has adapted we…

  • The Wider Impact of the 2007 Scottish Local Government Elections

    Lewis Baston•ARTICLE•Representation•2008

Representing the Future: The Report of the Councillors Commission, London: Councillors Commission. [Google Scholar]). The current work draws out the impact of the elections and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) on four areas—local government; Scottish politics: voters and parties; performance of S…

  • Americanization and UK higher education

David Smith, David M Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 19

This paper investigates the history of US influence on higher education policy and practice in the UK during the second half of the 20th century. The analysis is located in a broader context of cultural and policy encounters between the two nations during these years and considers the relevance of the contested concept of ‘Americanization’ to understanding the history of transatlantic influence. It argues for an interdisciplinary approach to unde…

  • The social market foundation

    Lewis Baston•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The Social Market Foundation began its life as an attempt to define the David Owen Social Democratic Party. It defines its ideology as favouring the primacy of the market but understanding the social underpinnings of the market, in distinction to the ‘free’ market. It was relaunched in 1992 with the aid of large donations; it has grown in size and influence since. It targets policy formers and media commentators. Like many think tanks, the SMF is…
