The Frontier as American National Identity Narrative in the Red Dead Redemption Games
In his work on national identity, Homi K. Bhabha claims that national identity is a narrative resulting from the negotiation between its pedagogical and its performative dimension. The former consists in the stable notion of national identity authorised through discursive practices, while the latter refers to the unstable performance of national identity whose constant slippage undermines its attempt to match the prescription of the pedagogical d…
Representing the Holocaust in Wolfenstein: The New Order: Ethics of Play, Thanatopolitics and State of Exception
Despite the considerable number of AAA historical video games set in World War Two, few of them have so far dared to include representations of the Holocaust. One notable exception is the first-person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order which in one of its missions tasks the Polish-Jewish playable character with infiltrating a fictional Todeslager disguised as a prisoner. This article provides an examination of the representation of the concentrat…
(Anti)Colonial Anti-Communism in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl: Appropriating the Anti-Colonial Rhetoric of Heart of Darkness and F.E.A.R. to Criticize Soviet Communism
This article analyses the anti-communist rhetoric of the popular Ukrainian video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl which was developed by GSC Game World and released in 2007. In this paper I argue that, in order to mount a humanist critique against Soviet communism, the game borrows the anti-colonial discursive structure of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness filtered through the video game F.E.A.R. If colonialism is predicated on the juxtap…

The “Pure” Romanian: (Re)writing Romanian National Identity in Dan Puric’s Romanian Soul
This paper investigates Romania’s auto-image as described by Dan Puric in his book Suflet Românesc ( Romanian Soul ). By employing imagology, this article first shows how Romanian national identity is constructed in opposition to Western culture and modernity. And by drawing on imagology and Hayden White’s approach to historiography, I provide a discursive analysis of the Romanian auto-image provided in the text. I show that Puric’s writing of Ro…
Immersion, Narrative, and Gender Crisis in Survival Horror Video Games
This book investigates the narrativity of some of the most popular survival horror video games and the gender politics implicit in their storyworlds. In a thorough analysis of the genre that draws upon detailed comparisons with the mainstream action genre, Andrei Nae places his analysis firmly within a political and social context. In comparing survival horror games to the dominant game design norms of the action genre, the author differentiates …
