Tourism, coworking spaces, and knowledge services
This paper examines how interactions between knowledge-intensive services (KIS) firms and coworking spaces (CWS) in different types of tourist subregions may shape local innovation ecosystems (LIE) in Bavaria. By differentiating between types of tourism—cultural, sports, regional, and international—and contrasting urban and non-urban contexts, the study investigates how tourism environments influence the presence and configuration of CWS in the c…
Agglomeration patterns of rural collaborative spaces
Collaborative spaces (CS) have begun to dot Europe’s countryside, yet their locational logic outside cities remains poorly measured. By geocoding every CS and every knowledge-intensive service (KIS) firm located in LEADER Local Action Groups (LAGs), this article measures their spatial behavior with three complementary statistics: the K-density function for basic proximity and the continuous-space M and m functions for the frequency and intensity …
Geographies of new ways of working
The geography of work has changed dramatically over the past years. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the flexibilization of labor, notably in spatial terms, but also in the way offices and other workplaces are organized. We discuss the role of new working spaces in the broader developments of digitization and flexibilization. The focus is on the factors behind the emergence of new workspaces and work models and their implications, including soci…
Funding sources and community embeddedness in rural collaborative spaces
Unveiling Locational Synergies in Urban and Non‐Urban Areas
This study examines the colocation patterns of coworking spaces (CWSs) and knowledge‐intensive services (KIS) in Bavaria, Germany. Using K‐density functions, the findings reveal that urban areas foster CWS development through economic diversity and interdisciplinary knowledge environments. Tailored regional policies, including incentives for operators, investments in digital infrastructure and initiatives to attract digital nomads, are recommende…
Territorialising globalisation in a post-socialist city
Evolution of New Working Spaces
This open access book provides multidisciplinary perspectives on the changing dynamics of new working spaces in Europe
Location Patterns and Drivers of Coworking Spaces in European Regions
The location patterns of new working spaces and the factors driving their emergence have been widely studied in Europe. However, research has mainly focused on specific countries and very local areas. We widen this perspective to a regional one and conduct a cross‐country study of the location patterns and determinants of today's main new working spaces, specifically coworking spaces that facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing. Coworking …
Location dynamics of coworking spaces in China
This paper explores the location determinants of coworking spaces (CSs) in the Chinese capital of Beijing, thus filling the gap in the literature about CS location in urban China. The study applies a count data model (CDM) to the data collected in 2022 to answer three research questions: (1) Where are CSs located and what are the location determinants? (2) How does Beijing’s urban structure affect CS location determinants? (3) What role do creati…
Agglomeration and coagglomeration of co-working spaces and creative industries in the city
The present paper investigates the location patterns and the effects co-working spaces (CWS) generate on the urban context. The focus is on Barcelona, one of the most important creative hubs in Europe in terms of knowledge-based, creative, digital, and sharing economy, and the city hosting the largest number of co-working spaces in Spain. The paper addresses three main questions: (1) Which are the location patterns of co-working spaces in Barcelo…
Do software and video game firms share location patterns across cities? Evidence from Barcelona, Lyon and Hamburg
Locating Software, Video Game, and Editing Electronics Firms
This paper analyzes location patterns of software, video game, and editing electronics firms (hereafter SVE) in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona using microgeographic data. These industries are mainly attracted by agglomeration economies look to benefit from skilled labor and spillover effects, and tend to cluster in large metropolitan areas. However, less is known about their detailed location patterns inside these areas. We contribute to the …
