  • Earthing Theology

    John D’arcy May•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2021

The encounter of Aboriginal Australians with European settlers led to appalling injustices, in which Christian churches were in part complicit. At the root of these injustices was the failure to comprehend the Aborigines’ relationship to the land. In their mythic vision, known as The Dreaming, land is suffused with religious meaning and therefore sacred. It took two hundred years for this to be acknowledged in British-Australian law (Mabo judgeme…

  • From Comparative to Interreligious Theology

    Open Access•John D’arcy May•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious History•2020

Perry Schmidt‐Leukel has proposed a “fractal” theory to correlate factors which are replicated across religious traditions. His aim is to develop notions of religious and theological pluralism which have become locked into a somewhat sterile conflict with “inclusivism.” A wide range of thinkers from a variety of religious traditions respond to his initiative, some applauding it, others criticising it as being too abstract to do justice to the par…

  • Time and History as Parameters of Liberation

John D’arcy May, John D'Arcy May•ARTICLE•Journal for the Academic Study of…•2014

‘Historicity’, the realisation that cultural values, religious beliefs and scientific ideas are historically conditioned, transformed the study of religions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The fusion of ontology, phenomenology and hermeneutics revealed an existential dimension of historicity, which was expressed innovatively—if enigmatically—by the Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas in his critiques of Husserl and Heidegger. Underlyin…

  • Faith, Ethics, and Communication

    Open Access•John D’arcy May•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious History•2007

Four very different books on the relationship between faith and ethics are reviewed from the point of view of coping morally and intellectually with difference. Marty focuses on the stranger in pluralist societies and finds that more than mere tolerance is needed as a response to religious difference. Humility and hospitality draw more deeply on the resources of the religions as a basis for true civility. Muers explores the communicative possibil…

  • Defining Democracy

    Open Access•John D’arcy May•ARTICLE•Political Studies•1978•Cited by: 36

For a short, definite, non-sectarian definition of democracy, I nominate Responsive Rule qua necessary correspondence between acts of governance and the desires with respect to those acts of the persons who are affected. This definition seems noteworthy, and perhaps commendable, for essentiality, or concentrating on the nature of democracy as distinct from its concomitants and merits; for generality, or congeniality with the notion that democracy…
