Refugee Families’ Resources for Children’s Education
The accelerating trend of large-scale displacement and forced migration of people around the world has created an urgent need for access to quality education for children with refugee status in resettlement contexts, as well as a need for innovative and responsive ways to support their families. Understanding Refugee Families’ Potentials for Supporting Children’s Mathematics Learning
Background/Context: We lack a nuanced understanding of the potentials and needs of multilingual families, particularly those with forced displacement histories, in contributing to children’s mathematics learning. As educators seek to increase refugee students’ access to powerful mathematics learning, an understanding of how refugee families view and participate in their children’s mathematics learning can offer insights for how we might reach the…

Background/Context Young children's engagement with mathematics is occurring in a context in which school transition and readiness concerns that invoke increased institutional rules and disciplinary practices involving power dynamics are coming into play. These trends made us curious to undertake an in-depth investigation of the different ways children and their teachers engage in mathematics in preschool classrooms today. Purpose/Focus of Study …

This article examines the shared experiences and understandings teachers draw on to teach children with an awareness of linguistic diversity. To do so, we analyzed interviews from Turkey and the United States and drew on philosophical hermeneutics as a way to develop a disruptive understanding of teachers’ views regarding the role of languages in mathematics learning. We pose that teachers’ perspectives about languages and children’s ability to l…
Becoming the teacher of a refugee child
Anti-immigrant discourses are sweeping across the globe while forced displacement brings educational, political, economic, and social challenges in many countries. Turkey’s latest initiative is the inclusion of almost one million school-aged Syrian children into the public education system. In this research, we aim to understand the evolving experiences of teachers of Syrian refugee students in relation to inclusive education in Turkey. We conduc…
Syrian Mothers Producing Counterstories in Co-Constructed School Spaces
This ethnographically informed field study, drawing on a blend of feminist theories and cultural learning pathways framework, reveals that Syrian mothers show strong presence and readiness to take active roles when opportunities present themselves in alternative spaces in the public schools of Turkey. As mothers produce counterstories in relation to their gendered, religious, and ethnic identities, they talk back to anti-immigrant discourses. The…
Figured worlds of immigrant fathers, sons, and daughters in steps to college through science bilingual family workshops
Interest in parents’ roles in promoting students’ academic success and career aspirations, especially in STEM areas, has grown as educators and world leaders set goals for expanding and diversifying the STEM workforce and extending science literacy across the globe. Responding to a call for research on fathers’ roles, and considering the rise in immigrant populations in many regions of the world, the study reported here investigates the experienc…
Latina Mothers and Daughters
Building on previous research of family engagement and using perspectives drawn from Chicana/Latina feminist theories, in this ethnographic study we explored how Latina mothers and daughters negotiated and contested multiple ways of knowing during bilingual science family workshops. Our research illustrated that critical pedagogies Latina mothers enacted in spaces intersecting family, school, and community contexts and how they navigated aspects …
