Evidence-Based Policy for Urban Environmental Health: A Cross-Sectional Stakeholder Survey in Bulgaria
Background: Translating urban environmental health evidence into actionable policies remains challenging in South-Eastern Europe, where environmental epidemiology has yet to reach maturity and institutional capacity and cross-sector coordination are suboptimal. This study assessed stakeholders’ awareness, perceived roles, and prioritization of urban health challenges, alongside the barriers and evidence needs related to healthy and sustainable ur…
Traffic noise assessment in urban Bulgaria using explainable machine learning
Land-use regression models for traffic noise were developed using machine learning. • Extreme gradient boosting (XGB) performed best, explaining 68.9 % of the noise variability. • Shapley additive explanations unpacked the black-box nature of the XGB. • Road traffic noise estimates are openly available. • Almost 97 % of the urban population was at risk of experiencing harmful traffic noise. Fine-grained noise maps are vital for epidemiological st…
Numerical Simulations and Assessment of the Effect of Low-Emission Zones in Sofia, Bulgaria
Bulgaria continues to face serious challenges related to air quality. To mitigate traffic-related air pollution and in line with the European regulations, the Metropolitan Municipal Council of Sofia has adopted and introduced low-emission zones (LEZs) in the city centre. The goal of this study is to address the specific needs of urban planning in the city in support of local decision-making. A bespoke emission inventory was developed for the LEZs…
Does nature make us less lonely? Analysis in Bulgaria's five largest cities
Our findings underscore the importance of extending and improving structured urban green spaces in Bulgarian cities
Re-claiming space for public life: Messages from the northwestern periphery of Sofia
A case-study based qualitative research on public space and public life in four housing estates in the north-western periphery of Sofia provides the basis for re-thinking urban legacy and the Modernist concept of public interest, once placed in the core of urban planning. The expert estimation of the current physical state and functioning of open public space in the housing estates, initially developed from the 1960s to 1980s, is compared to curr…
