Socioeconomic gaps in the allocation of curriculum modifications in inclusive mainstream classrooms
Differentiation is a widely established approach to addressing heterogeneity in students' learning needs and prerequisites in inclusive mainstream classrooms. While differentiation has been extensively studied regarding its implementation and effectiveness, aspects of social selectivity in these practices remain underexplored. This study focuses on curriculum modifications, a form of differentiation that entails reduced learning objectives and al…
Disadvantaged by chance? Examining the persistence of relative age effects on educational achievement
Most education systems have arbitrarily chosen annual cut-off dates for school enrolment, which create age differences of up to a year within a cohort of pupils. Prior research has shown that the oldest in a cohort systematically outperform their relatively younger peers. Yet, little is known about the temporal persistence of relative age effects in education. In this article, we investigate how relative age effects on educational achievement evo…
Inequality in participation in shadow education in mathematics in Europe: An intersectional perspective
There is a growing body of research on participation in shadow education (SE), reflecting the global growth of this sector. However, less is known about the topic from an intersectional perspective. Drawing on TIMSS 2019 and PISA 2012 data for European countries, this paper explores the way in which social background, gender and migration background interact to shape participation in mathematics SE. Our findings show that across European Economic…
Regional variation in participation in private tutoring and the role of education system features
The use of private tutoring to enhance academic outcomes has proliferated across the globe over recent decades. Despite increased scholarly interest in these so-called shadow education activities, the understanding of how education system features relate to the prevalence of shadow education is relatively limited. Moreover, regional variation of private tutoring within countries remains largely overlooked. This study exploits the federalist struc…
Participation in shadow education and academic performance: A comparison of upper secondary school students in Ireland and Germany
This article uses two longitudinal cohort studies (Growing Up in Ireland and the National Educational Panel Study) to examine how shadow education relates to academic performance in Ireland and Germany. Patterns of take-up of, and outcomes from, shadow education are found to reflect the particular country context—aimed at maintaining performance to avoid grade retention in Germany and preparing for a high-stakes upper secondary exam in Ireland. P…
Diverging Educational Aspirations Among Compulsory School-Leavers in Switzerland
Educational aspirations play an important role in shaping students' educational trajectories and destinations. Drawing on longitudinal data from the TREE2 study, this paper investigates the effect of tracking on the formation and adjustment of the educational aspirations of Swiss students upon leaving compulsory school. We show that educational aspirations are highly responsive to the educational track attended in upper secondary education. While…
Integrating biodiversity: A longitudinal and cross-sectoral analysis of Swiss politics
The effective conservation and promotion of biodiversity requires its integration into a wide range of sectoral policies. For this to happen, the issue must receive attention across policy sectors. Yet, we know little about how attention to the issue evolves over time and across sectors. Drawing from the literature on environmental policy integration/mainstreaming and policy process theories, we develop competing hypotheses, expecting either incr…
