Buddhist-Confucian Dialogue
Humility in context
Confucianism and Meritocracy in the East Asian Context
Towards a More Comprehensive Moral Psychology
Confucian humility (qian xun 謙遜) is a deeply rooted virtue in East Asian traditions and widely practiced among modern East Asians. Despite its significance, our modern understanding of it remains imperfect, partly due to a prevailing misunderstanding of its true nature under the label of “modestybias.” This bias is often cited as a representative trait of East Asian collectivism in social or cultural psychology, leading to a narrow focus on atti…
Unveiling the True Nature of Confucian Humility in the Modern Context
Gratitude plays a critical role in our social lives. It helps to build and strengthen\nrelationships, and it enhances wellbeing. Gratitude is typically thought of as\ninvolving oneself having a positive feeling towards another self. But this kind\nof self-to-self gratitude seems to be at odds with the central Buddhist view that\nthere is no self. Feeling gratitude to someone for some past generosity seems\nmisplaced since there is no continuing s…
The Role of Ancillary Motivations in Xunzi’s Thought
This paper focuses on some passages in the Xunzi 荀子 where Xunzi can be understood as allowing typical Confucian attitudes or modes of behavior such as polite deference or humility to be driven by a wrong motive such as self-interest, and explains why this understanding is mistaken in a broader context of the text. Even though Xunzi does not accept that one can take the Confucian attitudes or actions entirely out of self-interest, it is hard to de…
Missional Ecclesiology Education and Its Implications for Christian Education
Qian 謙 in Early Chinese Thought
Qian xun 謙遜 in modern Chinese is usually translated as “modesty” in English. In this paper, I examine the arguably earliest version of it in early Chinese thought, qian 謙. I first extract its basic features from the qian hexagram 謙卦 in the Yi jing 易經 and identify very similar features in other texts, such as the Dao de jing 道德經, the Xunzi 荀子, and the Lüshi chunqiu 呂氏春秋. On the basis of this textual comparison, then, I reconstruct the idea of qian…
The Ideal State for Humans in Xunzi
Here, attention is given to a cluster of terms that Xunzi uses in his understanding of the ideal state for humans and that reveal their internal relations. The cluster includes zhi 治, li 理, he 和 , and yi 一 . The kind of ideal state for humans that Xunzi envisions is finally explained on the basis of the relations among these terms. Li especially comes under close scrutiny. A new interpretation of li is offered by revealing its holistic nature. In…
