The Government of Bangladesh has digitised social safety net programmes to improve enrollment and allowance disbursement, yet the impact on rural beneficiaries remains unclear. At the administrative level, beneficiaries reported positive aspects such as support for enrollment and disbursement. However, challenges included delays du…

  • Encouraging Digital Financial Technology Adoption during a Crisis

Emma Riley, Abu S Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2025•References: 21

Can adoption of digital financial technologies during a crisis assist households with managing their finances? We randomly assigned 15,000 bank clients in Ghana to receive voice messages to their mobile phones encouraging the adoption of mobile banking services, a technology linking a bank account and mobile phone, during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using administrative data, we find that encouragement increased the monthly use of …

  • Early effects of the Covid-19 lockdown on children in north-western Bangladesh

Momoe Makino, Abu Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2024

Using data collected through a structured telephone-based survey in north-western Bangladesh during the height of the pandemic, we present evidence on the effects of household specific shocks on rural children induced by the COVID-19 lockdowns. We focus on three child-related outcomes: time use of children during school closures, plans regarding children’s future schooling, and the incidence of child marriages. We find that respiratory illness an…

  • Social identity and learning

Open Access•Sakshi Bhardwaj, Abu Shonchoy•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2024

The paper examines the effect of social identity on adult learning within a hierarchical social setting— an important yet often understudied issue for effective adult education. We leverage the random matching of students and teachers from a randomized controlled experiment in India, where illiterate adult female learners aged 18–45 were randomly assigned to a literacy program. We find a positive and significant impact of matching an upper caste …

  • A Community Health Worker–Based Intervention on Anthropometric Outcomes of Children Aged 3 to 21 Months in Urban Pakistan, 2019–2021

Abu S Shonchoy, Abu Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2023•References: 22

Objectives. To evaluate the impact of a community health worker–based “in-home growth monitoring with counseling” (IHGMC) intervention on anthropometric outcomes in Pakistan, where 38% of children younger than 5 years are stunted. Methods. We used an individual, single-blind, step-wedge randomized controlled trial and a pure control group recruited at endline. We based the analysis on an intention-to-treat estimation using the coarsened exact mat…

Yuya Kudo, Abu S Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

We implemented a 16-month randomised field experiment in unelectrified areas of Bangladesh to identify health impacts of solar lanterns among school-aged children. Our analysis of various health-related indicators – self-reporting, spirometers, and professional medical checkups – showed modest improvements in eye redness and irritation but no noticeable improvement in respiratory symptoms among treated students. Varying the number of solar produc…

  • How Does Contract Design Affect the Uptake of Microcredit among the Ultra-poor? Experimental Evidence from the River Islands of Northern Bangladesh

Kazushi Takahashi, Abu Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

This study examines the demand of microcredit among ultra-poor households in northern Bangladesh. We implemented a field experiment to identify what type of credit is best suited to their demand. We found that the uptake rate by the ultra-poor is the lowest for regular small cash credit, followed by in-kind credit. We also found that the ultra-poor are significantly more likely to join a microcredit programme than the moderately poor if a grace p…
