Ammianus Marcellinus, Peter de Jonge, and the Batavian Quadriga: The Interaction and Outcome
This article analyses the methods applied in the multi-volume philological and historical commentary on the text of the Res Gestae by Ammianus Marcellinus, the greatest historian of Late Antiquity. Started in 1935 by the Dutch Peter de Jonge and continued in the 1980s by a respected team of experts, the project was completed in 2018. It reflected, on the one hand, the growing dynamics of the quality of interpretations of the textual and historica…
An Unsuccessful Attempt at Presenting Political Struggle in the 5th Century Byzantium
The monograph under review is an attempt to reveal the content and meaning of one of the most notable phenomena in the Byzantine political struggle of the 450s to the 470s, the rise and collapse of the clan headed by magister militum Aspar. The review shows that the author of the monograph, presenting an extensive factual history of the events as presented by the sources, mostly narrative ones, is short of fully overcoming their bias. The attempt…

Fate of the Stereotypical Images of the Nomads in Ammianus Marcellinus’ Res Gestae
This article proceeds from the fact that the main task of Ammianus Marcellinus’ account on the nomads in book XXXI of the Res Gestae was as not an adequate representation of them as a force completely alien to ancient civilization, but an image of one of the root causes of the chain of events that led to the catastrophe of the Roman Empire near Adrianople in 378. The author of the article believes that, in order to solve such a literary and propa…
Place of the “Account of the Huns” in Ammianus Marcellinus’ Res Gestae
The analysis of the so-called “account of the Huns” in the late-fourth-century fundamental history Res Gestae should start from the understanding of the entirety of the source, permeated with the single historiographic concept, where the author’s excursuses form a loose composition, simultaneously playing a role for the author’s goals. The article’s author considers that Ammianus Marcellinus’ goal when describing the nomads in book XXXI of the Re…
Last Quarter of the Fifth Century Events in the Light of Auctarium Hauniense
This research reveals the signs of ideological, political, and, partially, social orientation of the anonymous compilations from Italy (most likely dated shortly after 523 AD), known as Auctarium Hauniense (which are a part of the document entitled Continuatio Prosperi Hauniensis), and presenting a mix of a chronicle and a duplicate of excerpts from a number of consular lists of the Roman Empire from 455–523. The attention is focused on the compo…
On Tendentious Records in the Continuatio Prosperi Hauniensis
This research reveals the features of ideological, political, and partly social orientation of the anonymous compilations formed in Italy (most likely shortly after 636 AD) and known as Continuatio Prosperi Hauniensis, which were the mixture of a chronicle, a duplicate of excerpts from numerous consular lists of the Roman Empire, and a brief overview of the rule of the Ostrogothic and Lombard kings. The author’s attention is focused on the compos…

This research focuses on the composition of the part of the “Continuat…
On the Sources of Cassiodorus’ Chronicle
The study reveals the characteristics of the documentation database compiled by Flavius Cassiodorus in 519 compilations, known as the Chronica , but represent a mixture of records and duplicates of excerpts from a number of the consular lists of the Roman Empire, the Ostrogothic Kingdom and the Byzantine Empire V – VI centuries. It is shown that the Cassiodorus̕ composition has retained all the hallmarks of the сhronicles of late antiquity. The c…
