E-cigarette use in global digital youth culture. A qualitative study of the social practices and meaning of vaping among 15–20-year-olds in Denmark, Finland, and Norway
Young people's vaping is a social practice interwoven in contemporary digital and global youth culture. Transnational regulations are needed to support individual countries in preventing e-cigarette use and exposure among young people
Ambivalence in Adolescents’ Alcohol Expectancies

Quantitative and qualitative data were prospectively collected at four time points between 2015 and 2020 from nationwide, socio-economic, and gender-balanced samples of Norwegian adolescents aged 12–18. The green shift? Narratives of changing cannabis policies and identity-work among Norwegian adolescents
Recent years have seen a growing public debate concerning the political regulation of cannabis products, substantiated by a multitude of competing narratives about the effects of various policies. However, little is known about how these ongoing discussions influence the meaning-making of cannabis use within wider contemporary youth cultures. Based on interviews with 80 Norwegian adolescents aged 16–17 years, this study explores narratives of cha…
Alcohol use in adolescence
Initiation of alcohol use often takes place in adolescence. This longitudinal study explores adolescents’ alcohol use by highlighting mediators in their network that either hinder or facilitate alcohol consumption. Qualitative individual interviews were conducted with 75 adolescents (age 15–16) during their final year of lower secondary school (LSS), and their first year of upper secondary school (USS) (age 16–17), amounting to 150 interviews in …
Single, Dual, and Triple Use of Cigarettes, e-Cigarettes, and Snus among Adolescents in the Nordic Countries
New tobacco and nicotine products have emerged on the market in recent years. Most research has concerned only one product at a time, usually e-cigarettes, while little is known about the multiple use of tobacco and nicotine products among adolescents. We examined single, dual, and triple use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and snus among Nordic adolescents, using data of 15-16-year-olds (n = 16,125) from the European School Survey Project on Alcoho…
Cannabis, youth and social identity
This article explores the evolving meaning of cannabis use in adolescence. Based on longitudinal qualitative data from 50 focus-group and 175 individual interviews with young Norwegians, followed from the ages of 12–13 years to 16–17 years, the analysis shows how representations, opinions and use of cannabis gradually evolve. When first interviewed, none had personal experience with the drug and the students spoke of cannabis use as a symbol of a…
Normalisation of non‐drinking? 15–16‐year‐olds' accounts of refraining from alcohol
Standardised snus packaging reduces brand differentiation
Even in cases where standardised tobacco packaging appears to have little overall effect on the valence of the average ratings, it can have a strong effect on the variability of the ratings. This suggests that standardised packaging can reduce the potential for brand differentiation
Adolescent perceptions of dissuasive sticks
This study supports earlier findings, and suggest that the use of unpleasant colours and warnings printed directly on cigarette sticks could increase perceived harmfulness, reduce notions of good taste, and possibly reduce desires to experiment with cigarettes in adolescence
Plain packaging
By July 2018, five countries (Australia, France, the UK, New Zealand and Norway) had fully implemented plain (standardised) packaging. Using government documents, we reviewed the key legislative differences between these five countries to identify best practice measures and potential lacuna. We then discuss how governments planning to introduce plain packaging could strengthen their legislation. Differences between countries include the terminolo…
Addicted to being cool’
Background: Although the prevalence of daily smokers are decreasing and there are signs of increasing stigma attached to smoking, occasional smoking rates have remained surprisingly stable. The increasing proportion of smokers who do not smoke daily emphasize the importance of understanding the reasoning behind this pattern of smoking. We explored how young adult occasional smokers in Norway viewed and defined their smoking and how they managed t…
Assessing notions of denormalization and renormalization of smoking in light of e-cigarette regulation
Young smokers and non-smokers perceptions of typical users of plain vs. branded cigarette packs
To the extent that plain packaging contributes to making smoking images less positive, it can potentially be an efficient aid in reducing smoking uptake among adolescents
Out of sight, out of mind? Removal of point-of-sale tobacco displays in Norway
Retailer's compliance with the POS display ban in Norway was high, and the ban was well supported in the population. Consumers believed that the ban could contribute to preventing smoking initiation among young people and to some extent also support cessation efforts
Stigma, or sort of cool
The aim of this article is to explore young adult smokers' constructions of identity, as revealed in accounts of their smoking experiences. A qualitative study was conducted in which interviews were held with 21 male and female smokers aged 18-23. The data were analyzed based on principles from a social constructivist approach to grounded theory, acknowledging the role of language and discourse in the construction of reality. Three key identities…
A difference that makes a difference
Through branding and package design tobacco companies appear to be able to promote their products in a country where advertising is banned, by means of similar principles that make advertising effective: by creating preferences, differentiation and identification
To be one who continues to smoke
This study analyses young smokers’ accounts of continuing to smoke in a context of increasing structural and symbolic pressure to quit. It explores the accounts in relation to issues of legitimacy, meaning and identity. A qualitative study was conducted with interviews with 21 male and female smokers aged 18–23 years. The interviewees described themselves in various ways as ‘in control’ of their smoking, discursively rejecting addiction. They als…
Occasional Smoking in Adolescence
This study discusses whether adolescent occasional smokers form a distinct subgroup in comparison with daily smokers, in terms of smoking motivation, confidence in ability to quit and social and cultural characteristics. In a sample of 2484 adolescents aged 16–19, 22 per cent (n=552) were daily smokers and 20 per cent (n=495) were occasional smokers. Findings show that occasional smokers differ from daily smokers in educational choices, subgroup …
