  • Are we advancing the quality of social work research: An assessment of quantitative research published in social work journals

Open Access•Elizabeth Hendrix, Elisabeth Koelling et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work•2025

Social work has grappled with quality of its knowledge base for over a hundred years. In the tradition of critical self-examination, this study was conducted to describe the methods employed in quantitative studies published in social work journals and to assess the extent to which they conform to widely accepted standards of quality. A random sample of 120 articles published in the top thirteen social work journals from 2010 to 2015 were reviewe…

  • The Impact of Substance Use Disorder Training on the Knowledge-Base of Paraprofessional Substance Use Disorder Counselor Students

Christopher Cambron, Jason Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Evidence-Based Social…•2025

There is currently an insufficient number of SUDCs to meet SUD treatment needs across the United States. Substantial growth in SUDC workforce needs is also projected by 2030. Well-trained paraprofessional SUDCs can provide one approach to expanding access to SUD treatment in coming years

  • “We wonder if white peers even want to understand”: Social Work Students’ Experiences of the Culture of Human Interchange

Tasha Seneca Keyes, Elizabeth Hendrix et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Education•2023

Diversity curriculum supports students in becoming critically reflexive social workers and advancing their multicultural practice. Often unexamined is how students perceive the explicit curriculum about race and racism and experience the implicit curriculum through the culture of human interchange. Ninty-three social work students completed a survey about their experiences in diversity classes. Using qualitative methods, we examine how students e…

  • The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Mental and Physical Health for Low-Income Women Receiving Tanf

Elizabeth Hendrix, Mary Beth Vogel-Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2023

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to poorer mental and physical health in adulthood. We examine the experiences of low-income women (N = 884) receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) cash assistance through a state workforce service agency. Participants averaged 4.66 out of 10 ACEs. Higher ACE scores were significantly associated with increased odds of: any physical health issue, fair/poor physical health, any m…

  • Macro Practice Supervision by Social Work Field Instructors

Jason T Castillo, Jason Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Education•2022

Although the Council on Social Work Education has identified field education and macro practice as core domains in social work education, there has been limited research examining the implementation of macro practice elements in field education settings. As part of a larger research project examining field instructors’ inclusion of macro and diversity-based content in the field practicum placement, this exploratory study focused on (a) field inst…

  • Eats me alive: Social workers reflect on practice in neoliberal contexts

Elizabeth Hendrix, Amanda Smith Barusch et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Education•2021

Social workers regularly engage with people who have experienced traumatic events—such as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, persecution, or armed conflict—but our understanding of how this work affects social workers themselves is still developing. Theories of burnout, vicarious trauma, and secondary traumatic stress illuminate the difficulty of trauma work, yet these approaches generally assign accountability for self-care to…

  • Painted Ladies of the Early Bronze Age

Elizabeth Hendrix, Elizabeth A Hendrix•ARTICLE•The Metropolitan Museum of Art…•1997
