Archaeobotanical evidence from the Bandužiai (Žardė) Late Bronze Age to Late Iron Age settlement in western Lithuania
The Žardė–Laistai–Bandužiai archaeological complex is one of the largest and most unique prehistoric sites in western Lithuania, dating from the 1st millennium BC to the 13th–14th centuries. Within the complex, the ancient settlements of Bandužiai (Žardė) and Bandužiai I are distinguished by the abundance of features linked to production and economic activities. Years of research at the Bandužiai (Žardė) settlement have provided copious amounts o…
Stable isotope measurements reveal diverse agricultural management strategies in the Roman Iron Age (1–400 cal AD) southeast Baltic
This study presents a series of new radiocarbon dates and the first stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements of C 3 cereal grains from Roman Iron Age (1–400 AD) archaeobotanical assemblages in Lithuania, southeastern Baltic region. These data are complemented by stable isotope measurements of faunal remains to assess local environmental conditions and evaluate human impact on the landscape through agricultural practices. The δ 15 N and δ 1…
Hunter-Gatherer Interaction in a Dynamic Lake Shore Landscape During the Late Pleistocene–Late Holocene in Southern Lithuania
Adaptability and resilience
This paper integrates archaeological, environmental and isotopic data from Roman Iron Age (1–400 AD) settlements in Lithuania to present an updated framework for understanding the development of farming and agricultural landscapes during this period. The study dates the introduction of new crop species, such as rye and oats, to around 100–200 cal AD. Notably, rye quickly became one of the most economically important crops, coinciding with the ado…
The earliest evidence for crop cultivation during the Early Bronze Age in the southeastern Baltic
Fishers of The Corded Ware Culture in The Eastern Baltic
Between 2800 and 2400 cal BC pastoralists from Central Europe migrated into the eastern Baltic paving the way for the Corded Ware Culture (CWC), and a new type of economy, animal husbandry. Traditionally the CWC people were viewed as highly mobile due to the lack of substantial traces of dwellings and material culture at settlement sites; they were reliant on an economy based on animal husbandry as demonstrated by zooarchaeological and stable iso…
Comb Ware culture in Lithuania
Šventoji 43 is one of eight Comb Ware culture sites known in Lithuania at present. The site was excavated in 2013 and 2014 and revealed a homogeneous pottery assemblage, which was classified as Comb Ware and was radiocarbon dated to 3900–3650 cal BC. As a result of this dating, it has been found that Comb Ware is the oldest pottery type to have been produced in coastal Lithuania. In fact, the pottery assemblage of Šventoji 43 also suggests that C…
Late Middle Pleistocene interglacial sediments from Buivydžiai site, eastern Lithuania
New evidence on the southeast Baltic Late Bronze Age agrarian intensification and the earliest AMS dates of Lens culinaris and Vicia faba
Deconstructing the concept of Subneolithic farming in the southeastern Baltic
Lateglacial and early Holocene environmental dynamics in northern Lithuania
Vegetation pattern and sedimentation changes in the context of the Lateglacial climatic events
Quantitative reconstruction of climate variability during the Eemian (Merkinė) and Weichselian (Nemunas) in Lithuania
Little is known concerning climate changes in the Eastern Baltic region during the last interglacial–glacial cycle and in particular, climate changes during the Weichselian. In this study, a quantitative reconstruction of the mean January and July temperature for the Medininkai-117 site in Lithuania is presented. The reconstruction is based on pollen and plant macrofossils from this site, which reveal that the vegetation was characteristic of man…
Depositional environment and climate changes during the late Pleistocene as recorded by the Netiesos section in southern Lithuania
Population history and palaeoenvironment in the Skomantai archaeological site, West Lithuania
Klaipeda Town, western Lithuania, in XVI-XVII centuries AD
History of the Environment and Population of the Old Town of Klaipėda, Western Lithuania
Progressive stages in the development of the Old Town region of the city of Klaipėda (in German, Memel ) were ascertained by analyzing archaeological and historical data combined with an analysis of pollen, diatom, plant macrofossil, and osteological findings as cross-referenced with radiocarbon measurements. The port city of Klaipėda, located on the eastern part of the Baltic Sea, was an important political, economic, and religious center during…
Environmental conditions and human interference during the 6th and 13th–15th centuries a.d. at Vilnius Lower Castle, east Lithuania
Human response to the Holocene environmental changes in the Biržulis Lake region, NW Lithuania
