The effects of Tai Chi practice on plantar tactile sensation and ankle proprioception in older adults with peripheral neuropathy
Purpose Peripheral neuropathy (PN) leads to decrease plantar tactile sensation and ankle proprioception in older adults, thereby elevating the risk of falls. While exercise has proven effective in mitigating these deficits, comparative studies on the effects of different exercise modalities remain scarce. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Tai Chi (TC) and Brisk Walking (BW) on plantar tactile sensation and ankle proprioception in old…
Which Types of Public Services Matter? The Impact of Access to Public Services on the Urban Settlement Intention of Migrants in China
This study examined which migrants accessed four types of urban public services including housing support, medical insurance, health records, and residence permits, and investigated the relative impacts of such accessibility of public services on the urban settlement intention of migrants. Using the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) data in 2017, our results show that migrants have selective access to public services in urban China. That is, m…
Perceptual Salience of Tones, Vowels, and Consonants in Mandarin Speech Errors
The present study examines the perceptual salience of tonal speech errors compared with segmental errors (consonant and vowel). Tonal errors are observed less often than segmental errors. We thus hypothesize that tone errors are more easily ignored during transcription tasks because tones may have lower perceptual salience relative to segments. We test this hypothesis in Mandarin, via a number reconstruction task. Sixty-nine Mandarin native liste…
