From efficiency boundaries to structural diagnosis: Informing land use strategies in China through an integrated production possibility frontier and land sparing/sharing framework
Exploring influenza vaccination coverage and barriers to influenza vaccine uptake among preschool children in Fuzhou in 2022: A cross-sectional study
Background: Children are vulnerable to influenza virus due to their developing immune systems, particularly children aged 6 months-5 years (preschool children). To improve the uptake of influenza vaccine in preschool children, it is important to determine the influencing factors of Chinese parents/guardians' (P/Gs) intention and behavior for children to receive. We implemented an investigation to determine coverage of influenza vaccination in pre…
Do inexperienced nurses in the lactation period experience workplace violence? A qualitative study
Introduction: Among clinical healthcare personnel, nurses face the highest proportion of workplace violence, which has a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being as well as their personal and professional lives. However, little is known about the effects of workplace violence on inexperienced breastfeeding nurses and their experiences during and after breastfeeding when they return to work. This study aimed to explore the experi…

Digital compensation: Smartphone use in the emotion socialisation of left-behind children in rural China
Through field investigations in two populous Chinese provinces, this study proposes a grounded theory of digital compensation afforded by smartphone usage in the emotion socialisation of left-behind children. Our interviews found that these children suffer from emotional deficiencies or deficits caused by the absence of parents’ emotional companionship, a lack of emotional education within the family and a decline in playmates in their rural comm…

The ‘Great Leap Forward’ in Chinese Higher Education, 1999–2005: An Analysis of the Contributing Factors
This article begins with a clarification of the chronology of the ‘Great Leap Forward’ in Chinese higher education following the 1999 decision to expand. It then provides an in-depth examination of the leapfrogging story by focusing on why universities commonly adopted a development strategy that stressed it was better ‘to become larger and more comprehensive’. The author argues that this strategy and its associated ‘abnormal’ university behavior…
Pholidota chinensis alleviates azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium-induced colorectal carcinogenesis through inhibition of TLR4 and COX-2
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) always progresses to colorectal cancer (CRC) which is the second most frequent cause of death by cancer. It is about 2% of population in the lifetime worldwide who at the risk for development of CRC. Oxaliplatin is an effective anticancer drug used for the treatment of advanced CRC; however, it always causes a robust painful neuropathy. Pholidota chinensis is a Chinese folk herbal medicine which was us…

Crisis Management, Regime Survival and “Guerrilla-Style” Policy-Making: The June 1999 Decision to Radically Expand Higher Education in China
Based on newly available memoirs and previously unexplored policy speeches by insiders, this article conducts a political analysis of the Chinese Communist Party’s decision to radically expand college enrollment in June 1999. I argue that the decision exemplifies a “guerrilla-style approach” to policy-making. From late March to early June of 1999 when the radical expansion policy was formulated and legitimated, the top leadership ignored oppositi…
Strengthening and Professionalizing Political Education in China's Higher Education
Party control over higher education in reform-era China has been a relatively neglected topic in the extant literature. Seeking to remedy this neglect, this article focuses on an aspect of the topic that has remained unstudied in Western scholarship: namely, the post-1989 regime's efforts to strengthen and professionalize political education (PE) in universities by intensifying the ‘disciplinary construction’ of PE. The article finds that these e…
