Predictors of Intention to Use At-Home HPV Testing
Covid-19 Policies and the Impact on STIs
Academic Institutional Barriers and Facilitators to Community-Based Participatory Research
Background: Collaborative research between researchers and community members can meaningfully address public health concerns. Collaboration can be complicated, however, due to unanticipated challenges stemming from academic institutions. This article describes how academic institutions can hinder and facilitate community-based research. Objectives: We evaluated a research partnership focused on structural determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitanc…
I Don't Even Understand How They Function
Background Women experiencing homelessness have higher rates of unintended pregnancies than stably housed women. Given that some of this may be attributed to nonuse or inconsistent use of contraception, we explored the behavioral cognitions for contraceptive use among women experiencing homelessness. The Information‐Motivation‐Behavioral Skills (IMB) model can examine health behavior cognitions, while acknowledging the macro‐level context. Theref…

Advancing Cultural Competency Toward Sexual and Gender Minorities
Making the Call
Research has identified the necessity of sexual assault victims to label their experience as criminal to initiate reporting. However, barriers exist in labeling uninvited sexual contact as criminal. This study examined college students' assessments of whether eight nonconsensual behaviors met the legal definition of sexual assault, and whether such behaviors should be reported to police. Results indicated students acknowledged the nonconsensual b…
Sexual Consent Communication among Sexual and Gender Minority College Students
Sexual scripts and consent communication methods are seldom explored outside of heterosexual, cisgender relationships. To date, little research has been conducted to determine how sexual and gender minority (SGM) students conceptualize and communicate consent. This study explored SGM undergraduate students’ (n = 81) sexual consent communication scripts using open-ended survey items. We conducted a thematic freelisting analysis to assess the domai…
Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening among College Women by Race/Ethnicity and Number of Male Sex Partners
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of race/ethnicity and number of male partners with sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening among college women in the United States. Methods: Using National Survey of Family Growth data, survey-weighted multiple predictor logistic regression models were analyzed. Results: Hispanic, Black, and Other race women had higher odds of STI screening than White women. Screening od…
Social Determinants of Health and Health Disparities
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States provides yet another example of the enduring and pernicious effect of social determinants of health (SDH) on African American communities. SDH, as defined by the Healthy People 2020 SDH framework, include domains of economic stability, education, social and community context, health and health care, and neighborhood and built environment.1 Within each domain, key areas represen…

Contraceptive Use Effectiveness and Pregnancy Prevention Information Preferences Among Heterosexual and Sexual Minority College Women
College institutional characteristics and the use of barrier methods among undergraduate students
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may be prevented through the use of barrier methods, but rates of use among US college students are low. Previous research focuses on individual-level factors influencing barrier method use, but few studies consider community-level influences. This study examined consistency of barrier use by college institutional characteristics including region, enrolment, control (public or private), locale, type, or reli…
