Big, Bold, and Beautiful: The Rise of Maggie T Larger-sized Fashion Amid the Decline of Australia’s Clothing Industry in the 1980s
As calls to revive Australian clothing manufacturing gather momentum today, much might be learned from companies that successfully navigated market segmentation in the 1980s, a volatile period in Australia’s economic and manufacturing history. This article offers a counterpoint to bleak portrayals of deindustrialisation that dominate most accounts of clothing manufacturing in this period. Adopting a cultural economic history lens and utilising or…
Fibres on the Field: Jean Shrimpton, Christine Borge and the Promotion of Orlon and Wool at the 1965 Melbourne Cup
For the 1965 Melbourne Cup Carnival, chemical giant DuPont de Nemours Inc. brought English model Jean Shrimpton to Australia to model youth fashion in Orlon, a synthetic fibre marketed as a wool substitute. By contrast, fibre rival, the Australian Wool Board, sponsored French model Christine Borge's appearance in traditional racewear in wool. Utilising a 'new materialist' lens, this article revisits the well-known story of Shrimpton's Melbourne a…

Changes in Religion among College Students, 1948 to 1974
Surveys of Williams College men in 1948, 1967, and 1974 asked about religious beliefs and related attitudes. The percentage of students rejecting home religious traditions increased from 1948 to 1974; the shifts were to more liberal and humanistic viewpoints. Church participation and positive attitudes toward the church both decreased from 1948 to 1974, but orthodoxy of religious beliefs did not change after 1967. The percentage of students repor…

Religious Change among College Students over Two Decades
Identical questionnaires were administered to identical samples of Williams College undergraduates in 1948 and in 1967, and the 1948 nonveterans were compared with the 1967 sample. Changes in the backgrounds of the students were controlled by a weighting system in calculating responses. The Roper Center: An International Archive of Sample Survey Data
When President Herbert Hoover's Committee on Recent Social Changes made its comprehensive survey of life in the United States a third of a century ago, it found very little that we would recognize today as a modern sample survey of social attitudes and human behavior. Since then a wide variety of economic and social surveys have been conducted by sampling methods, and the public opinion polls have been developed as a means of exploring the inform…

The Voter and the Non-Voter
Non-voters and voters, when equated as to sex, religion, education, and income, differ significantly. The non-voters took part minimally in organized activities and exposed themselves relatively less to politics in the mass media. Their political information was comparatively meager, and their attitudes uncrystallized. Non-voters indentifies themselves more closely with non-political leaders and were generally more isolated and immobile and most …

The Independent Voter in 1952: A Study of Pittsfield, Massachusetts
A challenging problem for both the student of political behavior and the practical politician is the self-labeled independent voter. Much of the research on what appears to be an increasingly larger segment of the American electorate has been either historically or sociologically oriented in the sense that it has focused on trend studies of the voting pattern of this group or has attempted to describe it in terms of its objective characteristics.…

I mean that they should not play life, or study it merely, while the community supports them at this expensive game, but earnestly live it from beginning to end.
