  • Categorization as a Form of Theorizing in Sociology

    Open Access•Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Journal•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Formalization of scientific knowledge is underlain by the process of categorization. Searching for the subject of a study is conditioned by the creation of relevant categories that name it, defining its contents and draw a line between the subject and other related categories. In the process of theorizing the subject acquires predicates— a collection of indictors that identify its contents and meaning. The process is tantamount to institutionaliz…

  • Collective Memory, its Structure and its Cultural Antecedents

    Open Access•Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Journal•2025•References: 1

The article examines the phenomenon of collective memory, the processes of its formation, and the role of different actors in these processes. It is noted that collective memory is an ambivalent phenomenon that combines, on the one hand, individual memories, and, on the other hand, the effects of political and cultural influence carried out by key social actors. A significant contribution to the consolidation of collective memory is made by the p…

  • Conceptual Foundation of Social Policy

    Open Access•Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Journal•2020•References: 1

Modern sociology places dignity and justice at the center of social debate. In estatebased societies only the aristocrats possessed the right to dignity and honor. The article analyzes these concepts as elements of the general structure of meaning underlying the institutions of modern societies. However, the progress of society conducive to their entry into the state of modernity the right to dignity kept extending towards an ever greater number …

  • Social mobility concept in changing societies

    Mikhail F Chernysh, Mikhail Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniya•2018

The concept of social mobility, as many other concepts, that underpin modern sociology is undergoing substantial evolution under the influence of change that occurs in modern societies often characterized as fluid and unstable. The mobility theory has been used by sociologists to diagnose the state of society, discover the directions to which it was heading. Early at the start of mobility studies one of the founders of social mobility theory call…

  • Theoretical and methodological study of ethnic tension causation

    Open Access•Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Journal•2016

The article presents theoretical reflections on the phenomenon of inter-ethnic tension. Inter-ethnic tension characterizes relations between ethnic groups that are in contact with each other. As a rule, the studies of inter-ethnic tension define it as a state of group consciousness of two or more ethnic groups with manifest aversion or hostility to each other. In his works Durkheim emphasized that inter-ethnic tension is caused by the weakness of…

  • Factors of Emergence and Reproduction of Inter-ethnic Tension in Theoretical Perspective

  • Fair Wages in the Russian Context

    Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Research•2015

To a large extent, ideas of social fairness in society are determined by the distributive relations that have been established in that society. Study results show that conceptions of social fairness in regard to fair wages are especially important in Russian society and are closely linked to the amount, character, and content of the work that is done, and the level of compensation in a specific enterprise. The conclusion is that the group interes…

  • The Labor Market and the Normative Order in St. Petersburg and Shanghai

    Mikhail F Chernysh•ARTICLE•Sociological Research•2011

A comparison of labor market changes in Russia and China shows that in China the reforms have encouraged the development of formal institutions, while in Russia, on the contrary, they are leading to the strengthening of informal standards. The emphasis on strengthening the formal rules of the game fosters the normative coherence of Chinese society, while in Russian society the orientation of the reforms tends to foster the idea that the emerging …
