Planning for cooler communities
Vacant lots are often perceived as contributing to negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts on surrounding communities. However, they also offer opportunities for strategic interventions that promote heat resilience. This study uses a decision-scale congruence analytic approach to examine the correlation between extreme heat and community resilience in the context of vacant lots in the city of Mesa, Arizona. By identifying and analyzing o…
Everywhere she maps, she changes the discourse
Maps not only extend our knowledge of the world but also may offer empowerment when it comes to marginalized people throughout the Global South. In recent years, mapping has undergone significant democratization through open-source mapping technologies, yet gender discrimination persists. To promote the inclusive participation of women in mapping, YouthMappers launched a gender-focused initiative, Everywhere She Maps (ESM), in 2020. This study ex…
Mapping the Global Geospatial Talent Landscape
Engaging local university students in participatory mapping for heat resilience to electrify health facilities in Africa
Purpose Reliable power in health facilities is crucial for cooling technologies, refrigeration of medicines, preventative care during extreme heat waves and effective health-care responses. Yet, data on clinical sites and the status of electrification remains incomplete and inaccurate in many locations across the globe, particularly in regions where reliable power supply is needed the most. This study aims to explore the viability of our design a…
Smallholders’ perspectives on sustainable agriculture intensification in Northern Ghana
In the quest to improve food security for a growing population with minimal environmental impact, assessing smallholders’ perceptions and practices of sustainable agriculture intensification (SAI) is a prerequisite for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2. However, little empirical evidence exists on smallholders' perspectives on SAI, especially in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa, where a majority of smallholders are relatively poor a…
Exposure to pro-tobacco and anti-tobacco media messages and events and smoking behaviour among adolescents in Gambia
This study underscores the significant impact of exposure to both anti-tobacco and pro-tobacco media messages and events on smoking behaviour among adolescents in Gambia. However, pro-tobacco messages had a greater influence on smoking prevalence than anti-tobacco messages and events. Understanding these associations is crucial for devising effective public health interventions aimed at reducing tobacco use in this population
Spatial and multilevel analysis of unskilled birth attendance in Chad
Unskilled birth attendance is spatially clustered in some parts of Chad, and it is associated with various disadvantaged individual and community level factors. When developing interventions for unskilled birth attendance in Chad, concerned international bodies, the Chad government, maternal health advocates, and private stakeholders should consider targeting the high-risk local areas identified in this study
Gender and households’ choice of clean energy
Current research in the energy sector has been dedicated to influencing energy policies to become more gender-sensitive. These research have concentrated on gender mainstreaming in the energy sector with only a few exploring the factors that account for gender differences with respect to clean energy choice at the household level. This paper examines the gender differences regarding clean energy choice for the home in the Cape Coast Metropolis of…
Digital humanitarians for the Sustainable Development Goals
Emerging youth movements to promote issues reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are celebrated as critical for the future attainment of societal aims. We explore the possibility for institutions of higher education to serve as an intentional third space to engender the creation and mobilization of hybrid movements that intentionally engage youth internationally. This case study interrogates the YouthMappers digital…
