  • Virtual Partners Improve Synchronization in Human−Machine Trios

Open Access•Bavo Van Kerrebroeck, Marcelo Wanderley et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2025•References: 57

The interplay between auditory and motor processes in sensorimotor synchronization is crucial for achieving a cohesive group performance, particularly in musical groups. This study addressed the impact of virtual partners on synchronization performance in human trios. With a novel methodology, the study utilized virtual partners driven by computational models to simulate real‐time synchronization with human participants. Trio synchronization with…

  • Memory Constraints in Motor Sequences: Typing and Music Performance

Caroline Palmer, Andrii Smykovskyi•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Psychology•2025

Humans across cultures exhibit incredibly flexible and fast typing on computer keyboards, cell phones, and other input devices, often at rates faster than the content can be spoken. Many people in Western cultures can play a musical instrument, also at faster rates than the same content can be sung. These flexible and fluent tasks exhibit several similarities in the role of instance-based memory and motor experiences, especially for comparisons t…

  • Promoting Latinx health equity through community-engaged policy and practice reforms in North Carolina

Open Access•Andrea Thoumi, Gabriela Plasencia et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: The Latinx Advocacy Team & Interdisciplinary Network for COVID-19 (LATIN-19) is a unique multi-sector coalition formed early in the COVID-19 pandemic to address the multi-level health inequities faced by Latinx communities in North Carolina. Methods: We utilized the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Framework to conduct a directed content analysis of 58 LATIN-19 meeting minutes from April …

  • Housing and Urban Development–Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers and Veterans’ Homelessness, 2007–2017

William N Evans, Sarah Kroeger et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Objectives. To determine what role the 88 000 Housing and Urban Development–Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers for permanent supportive housing among US veterans distributed between 2008 and 2017 played in the significant fall in veterans’ homelessness over the same time period. Methods. Using a panel data set at the Continuum of Care level over the 2007 to 2017 period, we correlated changes in vouchers with permanent support…

  • Head movements encode emotions during speech and song

    Steven R Livingstone, Caroline Palmer•ARTICLE•Emotion•2015

When speaking or singing, vocalists often move their heads in an expressive fashion, yet the influence of emotion on vocalists' head motion is unknown. Using a comparative speech/song task, we examined whether vocalists' intended emotions influence head movements and whether those movements influence the perceived emotion. In Experiment 1, vocalists were recorded with motion capture while speaking and singing each statement with different emotion…

  • Emotional response to musical repetition

Steven R Livingstone, Caroline Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2011

Two experiments examined the effects of repetition on listeners' emotional response to music. Listeners heard recordings of orchestral music that contained a large section repeated twice. The music had a symmetric phrase structure (same-length phrases) in Experiment 1 and an asymmetric phrase structure (different-length phrases) in Experiment 2, hypothesized to alter the predictability of sensitivity to musical repetition. Continuous measures of …

  • Repetition priming in music

Sean Hutchins, Caroline Palmer•ARTICLE•Psychology of Popular Media Culture•2011

The authors explore priming effects of pitch repetition in music in 3 experiments. Musically untrained participants heard a short melody and sang the last pitch of the melody as quickly as possible. Each experiment manipulated (a) whether or not the tone to be sung (target) was heard earlier in the melody (primed) and (b) the prime-target distance (measured in events). Experiment 1 used variable-length melodies, whereas Experiments 2 and 3 used f…

  • Music Performance

    Caroline Palmer•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Psychology•1997

Music performance provides a rich domain for study of both cognitive and motor skills. Empirical research in music performance is summarized, with particular emphasis on factors that contribute to the formation of conceptual interpretations, retrieval from memory of musical structures, and transformation into appropriate motor actions. For example, structural and emotional factors that contribute to performers' conceptual interpretations are cons…
