  • Accuracy in amicus curiae briefs and in commentaries

    David K Marcus, Paul S Strand et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2025

In this reply to commentaries, we argue that amicus briefs should identify when findings are based on simulation studies, clarify that we did not propose that American Psychological Association amicus briefs must be perfect, and refute notions that our coding was opaque or that following legal (i.e., Bluebook ) style absolves psychologists from following American Psychological Association standards. We agree with the commentary by Cobb et al. (20…

  • Citation accuracy in American Psychological Association amicus curiae briefs

    David K Marcus, Paul S Strand et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2025

For over 60 years, the American Psychological Association (APA) has submitted amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs with the aim of informing the courts about relevant scientific findings that may otherwise be absent from, or misrepresented in, the trial records of court cases. To achieve this aim, it is important that the summarized information accurately reflects the relevant scientific literature. The present study investigated the accura…

  • Daughter circumcision and maternal life satisfaction

    Open Access•Paul S Strand, Providence D Maxwell et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

INTRODUCTION: The present paper assessed the relationship between maternal life satisfaction (MLS) and the intergenerational transmission of female genital cutting (FGC, female circumcision). It was hypothesised that the association would be more strongly positive in countries in which FGC is more prevalent (ie, culturally normative), suggesting a practice that is socially reinforcing within sociocultural contexts in which it is common. METHODS: …

  • Mother-Child Conflict, Child Social Skills, and Depression Symptoms

    Open Access•Justin Trang, Paul S Strand•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2024•References: 2

The present study investigated child depression symptoms, social skills, and mother-child conflict from mid-childhood to mid-adolescence. Bidirectional effects involving all three constructs were anticipated, as were differential effects for child gender. Participants included 893 families from the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD). Data were from assessments at three developmental time points: grade 5, grade 6, and age 15 …

  • Bullying in schools and LGBTQ+ youth mental health

Open Access•Steven Hobaica, Paul Kwon et al.•ARTICLE•Analyses of Social Issues and…•2021

The current study utilized the 2018 Washington State Healthy Youth Survey to explore the relations among school district political attitudes, bullying experiences, and mental health outcomes, particularly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students. Although bullying was associated with greater psychological distress (i.e., anxiety, depression, and suicidality) for all students, LGBTQ+ students experienced more bullying a…

  • The social values development of preschoolers

    Paul S Strand, Andrew Downs et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2018•References: 7

We investigated the role of sociocultural (between-groups) and individual (within-group) factors on the development of preschoolers' resource-allocation preferences. We tested claims of the joint impact hypothesis of social values development that social-emotional understanding skills would predict the transition from simpler (individualistic allocations) to more complex (cooperative, competitive allocations) social values and that cultural backg…

  • Does facial expression recognition provide a toehold for the development of emotion understanding

Paul S Strand, Andrew Downs et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2016•Cited by: 2

The authors explored predictions from basic emotion theory (BET) that facial emotion expression recognition skills are insular with respect to their own development, and yet foundational to the development of emotional perspective-taking skills. Participants included 417 preschool children for whom estimates of these 2 emotion understanding variables and receptive language skills were obtained at 2 time points, separated by 24 weeks. Path results…

    Open Access•Paul S Strand, Celestina Barbosa‐leiker et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The present study investigated time‐dependent relationships between emotion understanding and the behavioral adjustment of preschoolers over a single school year using a latent variable structural equation modeling framework. Teacher reports of child behavior (hyperactivity, emotion symptoms, conduct problems, peer problems, and prosocial behavior) and performance assessments of emotion understanding were obtained twice at a 6‐month interval for …

  • Social values and preschool behavioral adjustment

    Paul S Strand, Kacy Pula et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 7

The present article explored relationships between social values (cooperative, individualistic, and competitive) and the behavioral adjustment of Latino and European American preschoolers within the preschool setting. Of interest was whether relationships between social values and behavioral adjustment differed as a function of cultural background. Assessments of social values and teacher reports of child behavioral adjustment were obtained for 2…

    Open Access•Andrew Downs, A Chris Downs et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Research assessing children's emotion understanding has increased over the past several years. Despite the proliferation of research, there have been few studies conducted examining the development of emotion understanding in children from diverse backgrounds. Further, there has been no research conducted examining the psychometric properties of emotion understanding measures when used with children from diverse backgrounds. A total of 597 presch…
