Using avatar rehearsals to practice eliciting student thinking with preservice teachers
A critical but understudied skill within teacher education is how to create productive book discussions with robust interactions between students and teachers. In the present study, avatar rehearsals were used as a practice-based technique to teach the skills of leading book discussions that elicit student thinking. The use of avatars is fairly new to the field of teacher education and understudied when paired with high-leverage practices like pr…
Science of Teaching (Only) Reading
The Science of Teaching Reading (STR) has burgeoned nationally and changed the requirements for Texas Teacher Education Programs (TEPs), causing researchers to fear that the focus on foundational skills will limit attention given to writing, and the reading-writing relationship in particular. The present content analysis investigates literacy course descriptions and syllabi in Texas TEPs to see how they are adjusting to new state requirements cen…
Core Practices Within Second Language Writing Instruction
Recently, researchers have called for more teacher education programs to embrace a practice-based framework for teacher education (PBTE) centered around core practices, but few studies have examined the impact of PBTE beyond coursework, particularly as it influences the instruction of emergent bilinguals. This qualitative case study follows the clinical teaching journeys of three preservice teachers PSTs to see how their participation in a PBTE p…
Cross-language transfer
Current research on cross-language transfer has focused primarily on literacy development. The present study extends the scope of existing research by focusing on argumentative reasoning, an important but under-research academic skill. A single-case study with a reversal design was conducted with four Chinese-English elementary students with the well-established Collaborative Reasoning (CR) discussion model. Data included transcripts of the lesso…
Political Discourse, Code-Switching, and Ideology
Language and Ideology is an area of critical discourse analysis that has increasingly gained importance in the linguistic sciences. The vast influence of the media has provided a need for the explicit analysis of common linguistic mechanisms, particularly those in political discourse. Codeswitching, general pattern in a speech community of switching between two or more available languages or dialects with respect to certain extralinguistic factor…
